Can You Bring a Vape on a Plane? Carry-On Only

Vapes must go in carry-on — never checked bags. E-liquid over 100ml must be checked. Vaping on board is banned on all commercial flights worldwide.

Can You Bring a Vape on a Plane? Carry-On Only

Yes, you can bring a vape or e-cigarette on a plane — but carry-on only. Vapes contain lithium batteries, and lithium batteries are banned from checked baggage on all commercial flights worldwide. Put your vape in your carry-on bag, your jacket pocket, or your personal item. Never pack it in a bag you are checking.

Separately: you cannot use your vape on the plane. Vaping is banned on all commercial flights, in the cabin and in the lavatories.

Why Vapes Cannot Go in Checked Bags

Lithium batteries pose a fire risk if they short-circuit or are damaged. In a checked bag in the cargo hold, a battery fire is extremely difficult to detect and suppress before it spreads. The same rule applies to phones, laptops, e-cigarettes, and any device with a lithium battery.

Aviation authorities worldwide — the FAA in the US, EASA in Europe, CASA in Australia, and equivalent bodies everywhere else — uniformly prohibit lithium battery-powered devices in checked baggage unless the battery is removed and carried in the cabin.

Since you cannot remove the battery from most vapes, the whole device must travel in carry-on.

This rule applies to:

  • Vape mods and box mods
  • Pod systems (JUUL, SMOK, Vaporesso, Uwell, etc.)
  • Disposable vapes (Elf Bar, Lost Mary, Geek Bar, etc.)
  • E-cigarettes (cigalikes, ego-style pens)
  • Cannabis vaporizers

E-Liquid in Carry-On: The 100ml Rule

E-liquid is a liquid, so it falls under the standard liquids rule in carry-on:

  • Each e-liquid bottle must be 100ml (3.4oz) or smaller
  • All e-liquid bottles must fit in a single clear quart-sized plastic bag along with your other liquids (toiletries, etc.)
  • Bottles larger than 100ml are not allowed in carry-on

If you want to travel with larger bottles of e-liquid, they must go in your checked bag. This creates an unusual situation: the vape device must be in carry-on (battery rule), but large e-liquid bottles must be in checked bags (liquids rule). You will need to split them.

Practical tip: Buy 30ml or 60ml bottles for travel — they're below the 100ml limit and easy to pack in your liquids bag.

Vaping on the Plane Is Completely Banned

Vaping is prohibited on all commercial flights worldwide, everywhere, at all times during the flight. This includes:

  • The main cabin
  • The lavatory / bathroom
  • The galley area
  • Any other area of the aircraft

Aircraft lavatories are equipped with smoke and vapor detectors. These detectors are sensitive enough to detect e-cigarette vapor. They are checked before every flight and have been activated by passengers who vape or smoke in the bathroom.

Consequences of vaping on board:

  • Immediate intervention from flight crew
  • Possible diversion of the aircraft (on some international flights)
  • Detention by police on arrival
  • Fines (up to $4,000 in the US under FAA regulations)
  • Ban from the airline

Do not vape on a plane. Do not vape in an airplane bathroom. If you need nicotine during a flight, use nicotine patches, nicotine gum, or nicotine pouches instead — these are all allowed.

Nicotine Pouches, Patches, and Gum

Nicotine products that do not contain a battery or e-liquid are straightforward to travel with:

  • Nicotine pouches (Zyn, On!, Velo, etc.) — no liquid, no battery; allowed in carry-on and checked bags with no restriction. You can use them on a plane.
  • Nicotine patches — allowed in carry-on and checked bags with no restriction
  • Nicotine gum — allowed in carry-on and checked bags with no restriction
  • Nicotine inhalers (medically prescribed) — allowed; may require documentation from a doctor on some airlines

Vapes at Your Destination: Country Bans

Vaping may be legal to carry on a plane (the device is permitted as carry-on), but it may be illegal to own or use in your destination country. Some countries have outright bans:

Thailand: Sale and import of e-cigarettes and vapes is banned. Possession can result in a fine or imprisonment. This is seriously enforced.

Singapore: Sale of e-cigarettes is banned. Possession of vaping products carries a fine.

Australia: Recreational vaping is legal but heavily regulated. Nicotine e-liquid previously required a prescription; regulations are in flux — check current rules before travelling.

India: Production, import, sale, distribution, and advertisement of e-cigarettes is banned under the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act 2019.

Brazil: ANVISA has banned the sale of electronic smoking devices. Bringing vapes into Brazil may be subject to confiscation.

UAE: Vapes are legal in the UAE, but cannabis-related vaping products are not.

Many Middle Eastern, African, and Southeast Asian countries have varying degrees of restrictions. Research your specific destination before packing a vape.

Packing Tips

  1. Store your vape in carry-on or a jacket pocket — never in a checked bag
  2. Turn the device off and engage any lock mode to prevent accidental activation in your bag
  3. Empty tanks if possible before flying, as pressure changes can cause leaks
  4. Keep e-liquid bottles under 100ml in a clear liquids bag
  5. Declare drone batteries to airline staff at check-in if asked — lying about battery contents is a serious offense
  6. Research destination laws — a device legal to carry in the US may be confiscated at your destination customs

Frequently asked questions

Can I put my vape in my checked bag?

No. Vapes and e-cigarettes contain lithium batteries and are banned from checked baggage on all commercial airlines. They must travel in your carry-on or on your person.

Can I vape in the airplane bathroom?

No. Vaping is banned on all commercial flights, including in the lavatory. Aircraft lavatories have smoke detectors that detect vapor. Violations can result in fines and being banned from the airline.

Can I bring e-liquid in my carry-on?

Yes, but standard liquids rules apply. E-liquid bottles must be 100ml or less and fit in your liquids bag. Larger bottles must go in checked baggage — but the vape device itself must stay in carry-on.

Are disposable vapes allowed on planes?

Disposable vapes follow the same rules as regular vapes: carry-on only, never checked bags. The built-in lithium battery means they are banned from checked baggage just like rechargeable devices.
