Carry-On Packing for Antalya: What to Bring
Pack carry-on only for Antalya, Turkey's Mediterranean beach capital. Charter bag limits, what to wear, and what the Turkish sun demands of your sunscreen supply.
Antalya is Turkey's premier beach destination, a Mediterranean city on the Turquoise Coast where summer temperatures regularly hit 35 to 40°C and the sea stays warm from May through October. The old city (Kaleiçi) holds Roman walls, Ottoman-era houses, and Hadrian's Gate — a striking marble triumphal arch built in 130 AD. Beyond the city, resorts stretch east and west: Side, Alanya, Belek (known for golf), and Kemer all sit within 90 minutes. For carry-on-only travel, an Antalya beach holiday is about as easy as it gets — the heat practically demands a minimal packing list.
Getting there: Antalya Airport (AYT)
AYT is the fourth-busiest airport in Turkey and handles an enormous volume of international summer traffic. The airport has two international terminals and is well connected to the city centre by bus and taxi. If you are staying at a resort, most operators offer private transfers that drop you at the hotel door — convenient with a single cabin bag.
Charter flight warning: a significant share of Antalya flights operate as charter packages through operators like TUI, Corendon, and various national package holiday companies. These frequently impose carry-on limits of 10 kg or less, and some restrict passengers to under-seat bag dimensions only unless an additional cabin bag is purchased. Read your booking documentation carefully before packing — the standard Ryanair or easyJet assumptions do not apply to charter bookings.
Climate: pack for intensity
Antalya has one of the most intense summer climates in the Mediterranean. July and August reach 35 to 40°C, the sun is strong from early morning, and the sea breeze provides only partial relief. UV index regularly exceeds 10 in peak summer — meaning unprotected skin can begin to burn in under 15 minutes at midday.
Winters are mild: 15 to 20°C with occasional rain, genuinely pleasant for sightseeing. Spring and autumn offer the best of both — warm enough for swimming, cool enough to explore the old city comfortably.
What to pack
Swimwear is the core of your packing list. Pack at least two or three sets so one is always dry. Everything else is secondary.
Clothing:
- Swimwear (2–3 sets): this matters more than anything else in your bag
- Cover-up or kaftan: for moving between pool and restaurant at all-inclusive resorts, and for walking the Kaleiçi market
- Light shorts and short-sleeved tops (3–4 days of outfits)
- One smart-casual outfit: lightweight trousers and a non-crumpled shirt for a nicer restaurant in the old city
- Sandals for poolside and the promenade
- Closed-toe walking shoes: Kaleiçi streets are cobbled and the old harbour wall walk is uneven
- Modest clothing layer: light loose trousers and a top to cover up for visiting Kaleiçi's Yivli Minaret mosque or similar sites
Sun protection — treat this as mandatory:
- SPF 50 sunscreen: the Turkish Mediterranean sun is intense; bring a full bottle and plan to buy more locally (Turkish pharmacies stock good brands at reasonable prices)
- Sun hat with a brim: a packable straw hat takes up minimal bag space and makes a meaningful difference at 38°C
- Sunglasses with UV400 protection
Toiletries: Type F power sockets (two-round-pin). UK and US travellers need an adapter.
Beach towel: most all-inclusive resorts provide pool and beach towels. If you're staying at a smaller hotel or renting a villa, a microfibre travel towel is lightweight and packs small. Alternatively, buy a cheap towel locally — Turkey produces excellent cotton towels (a hamam towel is flat, fast-drying, and a genuinely good souvenir).
What to skip
- Heavy jeans or thick trousers (redundant in summer; one light pair is enough for autumn/spring)
- An umbrella (sun shade is provided at every resort; rain is rare in summer)
- A full-size hair dryer (resorts provide them; even smaller hotels usually do)
- Multiple pairs of shoes — sandals and one pair of walking shoes covers everything
- Formal or business attire unless you have a specific reason
Bag size recommendation
For a week at an Antalya all-inclusive, a 40–45 litre cabin bag is plenty. Swimwear, cover-ups, and light clothing compress well. A personal item bag (25–30 litres) is achievable for trips of four or five days if you pack strategically and do minimal laundry.
If your charter operator restricts you to a small under-seat bag, consider whether your itinerary allows for quick hand-washing in the room — light synthetic clothing dries overnight in Antalya's heat, making a very small bag genuinely viable.
Three Antalya-specific tips
1. Check your charter operator's exact cabin bag rules before you pack. TUI, Corendon, and similar operators vary in what they allow in the cabin versus what must be checked. A 10 kg limit with strict dimension enforcement is common. Know the rules before you arrive at the airport, not after.
2. Visit Kaleiçi in the evening. The old city is beautiful at dusk — the Roman walls are lit, the restaurants are lively, and most importantly it is no longer 38°C. Morning visits are also pleasant but the old harbour gets crowded by mid-morning. Avoid midday in Kaleiçi in July and August unless you enjoy walking very slowly in fierce heat.
3. Buy a Turkish hamam towel on arrival. The grand bazaar area near the old city sells genuine cotton hamam towels (peştemal) for a fraction of boutique travel store prices. They are thin, fast-drying, lightweight, and far more useful than a conventional beach towel for carry-on travel. Buy one on day one and use it for the rest of the trip.
Frequently asked questions
Do charter airlines to Antalya have stricter carry-on limits?▾
Yes. Charter operators like TUI and Corendon frequently enforce a 10 kg carry-on weight limit rather than the standard 10–12 kg on scheduled airlines. Some charters restrict cabin bags to the under-seat personal item size only. Always check your specific booking confirmation for the weight and size limit — do not assume it matches any standard airline's policy.
Is Antalya an all-inclusive destination and does that change what to pack?▾
Most visitors stay at all-inclusive resorts along the Turquoise Coast — Belek, Kemer, Side, or Alanya. If you're all-inclusive, your wardrobe needs are minimal: swimwear, a cover-up for meals, and one smart-casual outfit for any trips into town. This makes carry-on travel very easy.
Which airlines fly direct to Antalya?▾
Antalya Airport (AYT) is one of Turkey's busiest international airports. Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, and SunExpress fly year-round. In summer, TUI, easyJet, Ryanair, and Corendon add significant capacity from the UK, Germany, Scandinavia, and across Europe. Charter-only operators also serve AYT heavily in peak season.
Is cash necessary in Antalya?▾
Cards are accepted at most hotels and larger restaurants, but cash in Turkish Lira is useful for the Kaleiçi old city market, smaller local restaurants, and taxis. ATMs are widely available in the city and at larger resorts.
