Pack carry-on only for Athens with tips on Acropolis footwear, Mediterranean heat, island day trips, and airline rules at ATH airport.
Carry-On Packing List for Athens: Acropolis Guide
Athens is one of the world's great cities — 2,500 years of history in a living, modern metropolis. The Acropolis, the Ancient Agora, the National Archaeological Museum, the Plaka neighbourhood, and the Monastiraki flea market are all within walking distance of each other in the compact historic centre. Athens is also hot in summer, physically demanding at ancient sites, and a natural base for day trips to nearby Greek islands. This guide covers what to pack, how to handle the Acropolis safely, and which carry-on rules apply at Athens International Eleftherios Venizelos Airport (ATH).
Flying to Athens: Carry-On Rules at ATH
Athens International Eleftherios Venizelos Airport (IATA: ATH) is one of Europe's busiest airports, located about 35 km east of the city centre. It is a major hub connecting European low-cost carriers with Greek domestic routes. Airlines serving ATH include:
- Aegean Airlines — Greece's main carrier and Star Alliance member; dominant on European and domestic routes
- Ryanair — many routes from the UK, Ireland, Spain, Germany, Italy, and across Europe
- easyJet — routes from the UK, Netherlands, Switzerland, and northern Europe
- Sky Express — Greek regional carrier operating domestic routes to the islands
- Volotea — routes from France, Spain, and southern Europe
- Wizz Air — routes from Eastern and Central Europe
- Emirates, Air France, Lufthansa, British Airways and other full-service carriers on long-haul and connecting routes
Aegean Airlines at ATH: Economy class allows one cabin bag up to 56 × 45 × 25 cm and up to 8 kg, plus a personal item up to 40 × 30 × 20 cm. Aegean is generally consistent with bag enforcement.
Ryanair at ATH: On the cheapest Regular fare, your only free allowance is a personal item measuring 40 × 20 × 25 cm under the seat. A cabin bag in the overhead bin requires a Priority fare upgrade. Ryanair enforces bag sizers at Athens.
easyJet at ATH: Standard fares include a cabin bag (56 × 45 × 25 cm) and a personal item (45 × 36 × 20 cm) for most fare types.
Check your specific fare tier before packing. The difference between Ryanair Regular and Priority changes your permitted bag size substantially.
What Athens Is Like: Packing Context
Athens combines Mediterranean heat with genuinely uneven ancient terrain:
- Very hot in summer — July and August regularly reach 37–40°C. The Acropolis and other open archaeological sites offer almost no shade.
- Ancient marble surfaces — the paths at the Acropolis, the path to the Propylaea, and many ancient sites use original or reconstructed marble that becomes smooth and slippery, especially in the heat. This is a serious packing consideration for footwear.
- Compact and walkable historic centre — Plaka, Monastiraki, the Acropolis Museum, the Ancient Agora, and Syntagma Square are all within comfortable walking distance. Athens is easy to navigate on foot.
- Late dining culture — Greeks eat very late; 9–10pm is a normal dinner time. Evenings are warm and pleasant from June through September.
- Island proximity — Piraeus port is about 45 minutes from the city centre by metro. Day trips to Aegina, Hydra, and Poros are entirely realistic.
What to Pack for Athens: The Full List
Footwear (critical for the Acropolis)
This is the single most important packing decision for Athens.
The path to the Acropolis is steep and paved with ancient marble. The marble is polished smooth by centuries of footfall and becomes particularly slippery in summer heat. Flat-soled sandals, flip flops, and any smooth leather sole cause slips and falls on this path — it happens every day to visitors who didn't expect it.
What to bring:
- Walking shoes or trainers with non-slip rubber soles and good ankle stability — these are essential for the Acropolis path. Vibram or similar grippy outsoles are ideal.
- A pair of comfortable sandals for flat ground, evenings in Plaka, and the Monastiraki area
What not to bring for the Acropolis:
- Heels of any kind
- Flip flops or flat-soled sandals
- Smooth leather-soled shoes
Go early if visiting in summer — gates open at 8am and the first two hours have far fewer crowds and cooler temperatures. By noon in July the Acropolis is brutal.
Clothing
Summer (June–September):
- Lightweight linen or cotton tops — multiple changes, breathable fabrics only
- Light trousers or skirts (some churches and monasteries require covered shoulders and knees — a light scarf or sarong in your day bag solves this)
- Sun hat — essential at open archaeological sites with no shade
- High SPF sunscreen (SPF 50 recommended) — Greek summer UV is intense; pack a small tube for carry-on and buy a full-size bottle at a Greek pharmacy on arrival for much less than you'd pay at home
- Sunglasses
- Reusable water bottle — hydration is critical on summer days at open sites; water fountains exist throughout the city
Evenings in summer:
- Temperatures are warm but pleasant (24–28°C)
- One slightly smarter casual outfit is useful — Athens has excellent rooftop restaurants and bars, and Greeks dress up for dinner
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October):
- Ideal season — 22–28°C, fewer crowds, manageable heat
- Light layers; a cardigan or light jacket for evenings
Winter (November–March):
- Mild but can be rainy (12–18°C)
- Light waterproof jacket, a warm layer, standard walking shoes
Day bag for island trips and city sightseeing
Athens is a natural base for island day trips from Piraeus:
- Aegina — 35 minutes by hydrofoil; famous for pistachios and the Temple of Aphaia
- Hydra — 90 minutes by hydrofoil; no cars on the island, donkeys only; completely flat-accessible from the port
- Poros — 60–70 minutes; lush and uncrowded
For ferry day trips, no extra gear is needed beyond a small day bag with water, sunscreen, a light layer, and your valuables. The ferries have luggage storage.
A 15–20 litre day bag is ideal for both city days and island day trips. It fits inside most 40-litre carry-on backpacks.
Luggage Strategy for Athens
Athens is an excellent carry-on destination. The historic centre is flat enough (Plaka, Monastiraki) that even rolling luggage is manageable on main streets. A carry-on backpack or small roller both work.
From the airport: Metro Line 3 runs directly from ATH to Syntagma and Monastiraki in the city centre in about 40 minutes. It operates from early morning to midnight. Tickets are priced separately from regular metro fare. Taxis are available but significantly more expensive.
For most summer trips of up to 10 days, carry-on only is ideal. Light linen clothing for summer takes up very little space. There is nothing in Athens that requires specialist gear or equipment — leave hiking boots and heavy layers at home for warm-weather visits.
What to Leave at Home
- Heels (marble surfaces at archaeological sites)
- Flip flops as your only shoe (bring them for evenings and beach visits but not for site walking)
- Dark heavy fabrics (miserable in 38°C heat)
- Full-size sunscreen and toiletries (buy locally; Greek pharmacies are excellent and much cheaper)
- Checked luggage (genuinely unnecessary for most Athens summer trips)
Local Tips Worth Knowing
The Acropolis Museum is one of the world's best museums and is fully air-conditioned — an excellent choice for the hottest midday hours. The original Parthenon sculptures are displayed here.
Monastiraki is Athens's famous flea market district, particularly active on Sundays. Ceramics, textiles, olive wood items, and local food make for good lightweight souvenirs. Budget some weight on the return trip.
Greek pharmacies (farmakio) are outstanding for skincare and medical supplies. Full-size SPF 50 sunscreen, after-sun, and quality toiletries are all available at prices significantly below northern European equivalents. Don't fill your carry-on liquids bag with these — buy on arrival.
Athens combines the world's most important ancient monuments with a genuinely vibrant modern city. Carry-on only is the right way to do it — light clothes, the right shoes, and a day bag for the Acropolis is all you need.
