Carry-On Packing List for Bilbao: Basque Country
Pack right for Bilbao with this carry-on guide covering Atlantic rain, Guggenheim visits, pintxos bar-hopping, and the San Sebastián day trip.
Bilbao is one of Europe's great travel stories: an industrial port city that transformed itself through architecture and food into a major cultural destination. The Guggenheim Museum building alone — a titanium-clad Frank Gehry structure that looks different from every angle — would be reason enough to visit. Add the world-class pintxos scene, the medieval Casco Viejo, and easy access to San Sebastián and the Basque coast, and you have one of Spain's best city-break destinations. But there is one thing Bilbao is very different from the rest of Spain about: the weather.
Airlines at BIO and Carry-On Rules
Bilbao Airport (BIO) has more connections than its size might suggest, particularly from the UK.
Ryanair operates numerous routes from UK and Irish airports to Bilbao — often the cheapest option. Standard Ryanair policy applies: free carry-on is a personal bag (40×20×25 cm) stored under the seat; a larger cabin bag (up to 55×40×20 cm, 10 kg) requires a paid Priority or Plus fare add-on.
easyJet also operates Bilbao routes with similar bag policies — check your fare tier.
Jet2 offers UK package routes to Bilbao, typically with more generous baggage allowances (check at booking).
Vueling is the main Spanish domestic carrier connecting Bilbao to Barcelona and Madrid, with a standard 10 kg cabin bag allowance.
Iberia and British Airways apply standard full-service carry-on rules (typically 23 cm × 40 cm × 55 cm, around 10 kg).
Volotea operates some European routes to Bilbao — check rules carefully as they vary by fare.
Bottom line: If you are on Ryanair or easyJet, know your fare tier before arriving at the airport.
Bilbao's Climate: Atlantic, Not Mediterranean
This is the single most important fact to understand before packing for Bilbao. Bilbao is not southern Spain. The city sits in a valley in the Basque Country, surrounded by green mountains, facing the Atlantic Ocean — and the climate reflects this completely.
Bilbao receives over 1,200 mm of rainfall per year, making it one of the wettest major cities in Spain. For comparison, Barcelona gets around 600 mm and Málaga barely 450 mm.
Summers (June–August): Mild rather than hot. Temperatures typically reach 22–26°C — pleasant but not beach-hot. Rain showers are frequent even in summer, though rarely all-day. Humidity is moderate. Nothing like the 40°C baking heat of Seville or the Canary Islands.
Spring and autumn: Variable. Green, lush, and often rainy. Good walking weather between showers.
Winters (October–March): Mild (10–15°C) but grey and rainy. Not cold by northern European standards, but persistently damp. Snow is rare in the city itself (though the surrounding mountains get snow).
The Basque coast and surrounding hills stay deep green year-round because it rains enough to maintain them. This is the visual character of the region — nothing like Andalusia or the Mediterranean.
The Essential Item: A Waterproof Layer
A waterproof layer is not optional in Bilbao. Pack one regardless of season, regardless of what the forecast says on the day you leave home. This means one of:
- A packable waterproof rain jacket (the best choice — packs small, works as a layer)
- A light waterproof shell jacket
Budget waterproof packables from brands like Decathlon (Quechua) compress to the size of a grapefruit and cost under 30 euros — this is not a category where you need to spend significantly. What matters is that it is actually waterproof (taped seams, not just water-resistant), not just a wind shell.
Rain in Bilbao is typically showery — an hour of rain, then dry, then more rain. A packable waterproof you can shove in a small day bag is more practical than a heavy full rain jacket.
What You Do NOT Need to Pack
This deserves its own section because visitors conditioned by Spanish tourism often over-pack for heat:
- High-SPF sunscreen is not a priority item. You may need it on a particularly sunny summer day but it is not the first thing to pack.
- Sun hats are useful for summer but far less critical than in Seville or Málaga.
- Heat management clothing — moisture-wicking performance fabrics, cooling towels, and the like — are not relevant here.
Instead of these, prioritise layers and waterproofing.
The Guggenheim Museum
The Guggenheim Bilbao is extraordinary — arguably the most spectacular modern building in Europe, and the collection inside (Koons, Serra, Bourgeois, Basquiat, and rotating exhibitions) matches the architecture. Book tickets in advance via the Guggenheim Bilbao website; popular exhibitions sell out.
The building is about a 20-minute walk from the Casco Viejo (old town) along the Nervión River. The walk along the riverbank, past the Puppy (Jeff Koons' giant flower dog sculpture) and the Spider (Louise Bourgeois' Maman), is free — you can admire the exterior without buying a ticket.
What to wear: The Guggenheim has no specific dress code. Comfortable walking shoes are useful as the exhibition spaces are large. A waterproof jacket you can leave at the bag check on entry.
Pintxos Culture: The Main Event
Bilbao and San Sebastián are the world capitals of pintxos (pronounced "peen-chos") — the Basque version of tapas. In Bilbao the scene centres on the Casco Viejo, particularly the streets around the Mercado de la Ribera and the Seven Streets (Siete Calles).
The system: walk into a bar, order a drink (txakoli white wine, local beer, or cider are classic), and eat pintxos from the bar. Some are cold and already laid out on the counter; others are made to order (caliente). You move from bar to bar, having one or two pintxos at each place. It is social, affordable, and an excellent way to eat very well without a formal restaurant reservation.
Dress: Casual. Bilbao's pintxos bars are not formal. You will see locals in jeans and outdoor jackets bar-hopping in the rain. No dress code needed. Smart-casual for a sit-down restaurant in the evening, but even then Granada is much less formal than Madrid or Barcelona.
San Sebastián Day Trip
San Sebastián (Donostia in Basque) is 50 km east of Bilbao along the coast — about 45–50 minutes by PESA bus (frequent service) or around an hour by car. It is one of the most beautiful cities in Spain and is considered by many food writers to have the highest concentration of outstanding restaurants (including multiple Michelin-starred establishments) of any city in the world per capita.
La Concha beach, in the city's bay, is stunning — a perfect arc of sand framed by two headlands. In summer it is packed; in winter the walk along the Paseo de la Concha with the sea crashing is dramatic in a different way.
Most visitors to Bilbao include at least a day in San Sebastián. The bus is the easiest way to get there.
The Camino del Norte
Bilbao is a stage on the Camino del Norte (Northern Way of the Camino de Santiago). If you are walking sections of the Camino, your packing priorities shift significantly: hiking boots or trail shoes, moisture-wicking socks, trekking poles, and a lighter day pack become essential. The northern Camino is considered one of the most beautiful but also most challenging routes — the Atlantic coast section involves real elevation gain.
If you are doing a hybrid city-break and Camino walking trip, this is one of the cases where you might genuinely need to check a bag for footwear, since city shoes and hiking boots are hard to combine in a single carry-on efficiently.
