Carry-On Only for Fort Myers: RSW Airport and Packing Tips
Fort Myers is Southwest Florida's most accessible beach gateway — a mid-size city on the Caloosahatchee River with easy reach to some of the Gulf Coast's best beaches, an internationally famous shelling island in Sanibel, a network of canals in Cape Coral that rivals Venice, and a fascinating piece of American history in the Edison and Ford Winter Estates. Packing for Fort Myers is genuinely simple during the snowbird season: the climate is warm and dry, the dress code is beach-casual, and a carry-on bag handles a week's worth of activities comfortably.
RSW: Southwest Florida International Airport
Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) sits about 20 minutes east of Fort Myers via I-75, in a well-connected part of Lee County that keeps ground transfer times short. The airport is modern, well-organized, and easy to navigate — a departure from the congestion of major Florida hubs like Miami or Orlando.
Snowbird season surge. RSW is one of the most seasonally skewed airports in the United States. From November through April, the airport handles a significant increase in flights as snowbirds arrive from the Midwest, Canada, New York, and New England. Airlines add routes and frequency during this period, making RSW better-connected to regional feeder cities (Buffalo, Detroit, Cleveland, Columbus, Montreal) than its year-round schedule suggests. If you are traveling in peak season, book earlier than you would for a similar-sized airport — RSW seats sell out faster than expected.
Carry-on policies at RSW. All the major US carriers serve RSW. Southwest Airlines, with its free carry-on policy for all passengers, is a strong choice for carry-on only travelers. American and Delta carry-on policies are standard (checked bag fees apply for basic economy, but carry-on is included). Spirit and Frontier serve RSW with their base fare carry-on restrictions — budget carefully if flying these carriers and add the carry-on cost to your comparison.
Ground transport. Rental cars are the dominant transport option and the most practical for reaching Sanibel, Cape Coral, and the Estates. Uber and Lyft operate at RSW but a car is worth the cost for most itineraries. The airport's rental car facility is close and efficient.
Fort Myers Climate: Tropical Two-Season Pattern
Southwest Florida operates on a pronounced two-season climate that is more predictable than most of the continental US: a warm, bone-dry winter (the reason snowbirds come) and a hot, humid, rainy summer (the reason most tourists don't).
| Season | Months | Daytime Temp | Humidity | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peak season (winter) | December–April | 22–26°C (72–79°F) | Low | Blue skies, no rain, warm Gulf water |
| Shoulder | May, November | 27–30°C (81–86°F) | Building | Occasional afternoon showers |
| Rainy season | June–October | 32–36°C (90–97°F) | Very high | Daily afternoon storms; hurricane risk |
Hurricane season (June–November): Fort Myers sits in one of the Gulf Coast's historically active hurricane corridors. Hurricane Ian struck directly in September 2022 and caused devastating damage to Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel Island. The area has rebuilt substantially, but the 2022 storm is a reminder that Gulf Coast hurricane season is real. If traveling June through October, monitor NOAA forecasts from the moment you book, purchase comprehensive travel insurance that covers hurricane cancellations, and have flexible flight dates if possible. Peak hurricane risk is August through October.
What to Pack for Fort Myers
Snowbird Season (December–April): The Ideal Carry-On
Peak season Fort Myers is among the easiest climates to pack for in North America. Warm days, cool evenings, virtually zero rain, and a thoroughly casual dress culture mean your carry-on can be small.
Core items:
- 2–3 swimsuits (you will wear them daily; quick-dry fabric recommended)
- 4–5 lightweight cotton or linen tops
- 2 pairs of casual shorts or lightweight trousers
- 1 light cardigan or thin zip-fleece for evenings (temperatures drop to 15–18°C after sunset in January–February)
- Comfortable walking sandals that work on beach and urban surfaces
- Water shoes or old sneakers for shelling at Sanibel (rocky shell beaches are hard on bare feet)
- 1 beach cover-up (required at restaurants; Fort Myers Beach restaurants enforce this)
- Mesh or lightweight drawstring bag for carrying shells from Sanibel
Sunscreen discipline: Florida winter sun is deceptive — the air feels cool and comfortable, but UV index is high and cloud cover is rare. Pack SPF 50 and apply every two hours while outdoors. Reef-safe sunscreen is now required at Sanibel and most Gulf Coast parks.
Nothing formal required. Fort Myers has essentially no formal dining culture. The Edison and Ford Winter Estates are casual-dress attractions. Even the nicest restaurants on Sanibel and Cape Coral are smart-casual at most.
Rainy Season (June–October): Pack Lighter, Plan Differently
If you are traveling in the off-season — common for budget travelers and Floridians visiting from elsewhere — the packing logic shifts somewhat.
- Lightweight technical fabrics over cotton (cotton stays wet for hours after afternoon storms)
- A compact travel umbrella or packable poncho for the nearly daily afternoon storm cycle
- Insect repellent (mosquito season peaks in summer; DEET or picaridin-based products are most effective)
- Closed-toe shoes for trail or nature areas — sandals get muddy
Sanibel Island: The Shelling Capital
Sanibel Island is internationally known as one of the world's best shelling beaches, and for good reason: the island's east-west orientation causes shells to accumulate on its shores in extraordinary quantities rather than washing up and away. The Sanibel Stoop — the bent-over posture of intent shell hunters scanning the waterline — is a recognized local phenomenon, visible on any morning walk along the shore.
Packing for Sanibel:
- Bring a lightweight mesh bag or a thin canvas tote specifically for shells. Shells are heavy — plan how you will carry them home. Priority Mail flat-rate boxes at the Sanibel post office are a popular solution for significant collections.
- Water shoes or old sneakers handle the shell-covered sand better than bare feet for extended shelling walks
- Early morning at low tide is peak shelling time; bring a waterproof watch or check tide charts
The J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel is one of the largest undeveloped mangrove ecosystems in the US. Walking and cycling the Wildlife Drive through the refuge requires no special clothing but closed-toe shoes are more comfortable on the gravel road.
Causeway and access. The Sanibel Causeway connects the island to the mainland — there is a toll ($6–$7 per vehicle as of 2026). No toll on exit. Sanibel's character is deliberately low-key: no chain hotels, no fast food franchises allowed on the island by local ordinance.
Fort Myers Beach: Rebuilding After Ian
Fort Myers Beach on Estero Island took a catastrophic direct hit from Hurricane Ian in September 2022. As of 2026, the island has rebuilt significantly — restaurants, hotels, and beach infrastructure have returned, though some lots remain vacant or under development. The beach itself — white sand on the Gulf of Mexico — is as good as ever.
Times Square at the north end of the island is the main commercial hub and is substantially rebuilt. Lynn Hall Memorial Park has beach access, parking, and the fishing pier. The pace on Fort Myers Beach is casual and relaxed; it attracts a younger crowd than the quieter Sanibel.
Cape Coral: Canal City
Cape Coral has more miles of navigable waterways than any city in the world — over 400 miles of canals. The city's boat culture means water activity is the defining local pastime.
- Kayak and paddleboard rentals are available throughout Cape Coral and at several Gulf access points
- Manatee viewing is possible year-round but peak in winter (manatees seek warm water near power plant outflows and in shallow canals)
- The Matlacha neighborhood (between Cape Coral and Pine Island) is a colorful fishing village with local art galleries and seafood restaurants
- No beach within Cape Coral itself — residents drive to Fort Myers Beach or Sanibel
Edison and Ford Winter Estates
One of Southwest Florida's most historically significant attractions, the Edison and Ford Winter Estates sit side by side on the Caloosahatchee River in downtown Fort Myers. Thomas Edison built his winter home (Seminole Lodge) in 1886 and maintained it for decades. Henry Ford built his winter home (The Mangoes) next door in 1916.
The site includes Edison's original laboratories (some of the best-preserved 19th-century laboratory buildings in the US), the Edison Botanic Research Corporation gardens, a museum with early phonographs, light bulbs, and Ford vehicles, and the riverfront grounds that both families shared.
No special clothing required — comfortable walking shoes and whatever you would wear for a morning out. Tours last 60–90 minutes and are mostly outdoors in the gardens and grounds. In summer months, a hat and sunscreen are particularly important given the lack of shade on some paths.
Day Trips from Fort Myers
Everglades airboat tours are available from several operators south toward Naples and through the Tamiami Trail. Half-day trips are the typical format. Airboats generate significant spray — avoid packing anything you don't want to get damp.
Naples (45 minutes south) is a more upscale alternative to Fort Myers with a beautiful downtown Fifth Avenue South shopping district, excellent restaurants, and white-sand beaches. Naples is more formal than Fort Myers — a smart-casual outfit is appropriate for dinner.
Marco Island (1 hour south) has Gulf beaches and a quieter resort character.
Frequently asked questions
What airport serves Fort Myers?▾
Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) is the main commercial airport serving Fort Myers and the greater Lee County area. RSW is located about 20 minutes from downtown Fort Myers and serves a wide range of domestic routes, with a notable spike in frequency during the November through April snowbird season when airlines add capacity for the influx of northern winter escapees. Major carriers including American, Delta, Southwest, United, JetBlue, and Spirit all serve RSW.
What beach is near Fort Myers?▾
Fort Myers has several excellent beaches within easy reach. Fort Myers Beach on Estero Island is about 20 minutes from downtown and is the most popular mainland-adjacent option, though it has been rebuilding since Hurricane Ian hit in 2022. Sanibel Island, about 30 to 45 minutes away, is world-famous for its shelling and quieter atmosphere. Captiva Island, accessible through Sanibel, is smaller and more upscale. Lovers Key State Park between Fort Myers Beach and Bonita Springs is a less crowded option with good shelling and wildlife.
When is the best time to visit Fort Myers Florida?▾
December through April is the classic snowbird season and is widely considered the best time to visit Fort Myers. Temperatures are warm and comfortable (22 to 26 degrees Celsius), humidity is low, and there is essentially no rain. The beaches are at their best, and the Gulf of Mexico water temperature is pleasant for swimming. The tradeoff is that this is also the most crowded and expensive period. May is a transitional shoulder month with lighter crowds and still-pleasant weather. June through October brings heat, high humidity, and hurricane risk.
