Carry-On for Ouarzazate: Sahara Gateway & Ait Benhaddou Packing
Ouarzazate carry-on guide: OZZ airport, Ait Benhaddou packing tips, Draa Valley, Sahara desert sun protection, and what to wear in southern Morocco.
Carry-On for Ouarzazate: Sahara Gateway & Ait Benhaddou Packing
Ouarzazate is the pivot point of southern Morocco: the last city before the desert, the base for filming expeditions and tourist caravans alike, and the gateway to the Draa Valley's palm groves and kasbahs. It is a practical, unhurried city — not a typical tourist destination in itself, but an essential staging post for the Sahara and Ait Benhaddou. The packing challenge here is entirely environmental: fierce sun, dust, dramatic day-to-night temperature swings, and terrain that ranges from paved souks to rocky kasbah stairways. Get the sun protection right and everything else is manageable.
Getting to Ouarzazate
OZZ — Ouarzazate Airport. A small regional airport served by Royal Air Maroc from Casablanca Anfa (CAS) and occasionally from Paris and other European cities in summer. Flight time from Casablanca is approximately 1 hour. The airport is 3 km from town and easily reached by petit taxi. Baggage allowances on Royal Air Maroc domestic flights are typically 23 kg checked plus 10 kg carry-on — generous enough for any trip.
By road from Marrakech. The 4-hour drive over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (Route Nationale 9) is one of the great Moroccan road journeys. The pass crests at 2,260m with panoramic Atlas views before dropping dramatically into the pre-Saharan south. CTM buses run this route twice daily; shared grand taxis depart from Marrakech's Bab Doukkala bus station. Many visitors rent a car in Marrakech for flexibility along the route.
The Heat and Sun Problem
Southern Morocco's climate is the defining packing variable. Summer temperatures in Ouarzazate regularly reach 38–42°C during the day. Even spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) — the ideal visiting seasons — bring midday heat of 28–35°C. The plateau altitude (1,160m) keeps humidity low, which makes the heat more bearable than coastal Morocco but also more deceptive — sunburn happens faster than expected.
Sun protection essentials:
- SPF 50 sunscreen (mineral-based is more stable in extreme heat)
- Wide-brim hat (a packable straw or canvas hat works well; buy one in the souks if needed)
- UV-blocking sunglasses (polarised lenses help on desert road glare)
- Lightweight long-sleeve tops in linen or cotton — counterintuitively, covering up keeps you cooler than bare skin in direct sun
The temperature inversion. Ouarzazate's desert air loses heat rapidly after sunset. A day that hits 40°C will often be 14–16°C by 10pm. Pack a mid-layer — a light fleece or a merino long-sleeve — that comes out in the evenings. Nights in the Draa Valley or desert camps near Zagora can drop to 10°C even in summer.
Ait Benhaddou: What to Expect
Ait Benhaddou (Aït Benhaddou) is a UNESCO World Heritage site 30 km northwest of Ouarzazate and a must-visit. The ksar — a fortified village of layered red-ochre mud-brick towers — rises steeply from the flat valley floor. Most of it is now uninhabited, though a few families remain in the lower section. The upper citadel, reached via steep uneven stone stairways, gives views across the valley and the snow-dusted High Atlas in winter.
Getting there. A grand taxi from Ouarzazate takes 30 minutes and costs around 15–25 MAD per seat in a shared taxi. Organised day tours from Ouarzazate or Marrakech include Ait Benhaddou. The site has no entrance fee for the village itself, though a guide is usually waiting to offer services at the river crossing — optional but informative.
Shoe choice matters. The stairways inside the ksar are steep, uneven, and sometimes slippery. Closed shoes with grip — not sandals — are recommended for climbing to the citadel. Bring sandals for town walking and to change into after the site visit.
The Draa Valley Road to Zagora
South of Ouarzazate, the N9 follows the Draa River through a ribbon of palm groves and ksour (plural of ksar). The valley road to Zagora (165 km) is one of the most beautiful drives in Morocco: date palms framing red clay villages, camels grazing in dry riverbeds, and the Jbel Saghro massif rising to the east.
Zagora is the trailhead for desert excursions toward M'hamid and the Erg Chigaga dunes. Overnight camel treks into the Sahara are possible from Zagora or M'hamid. If your itinerary extends into the deep Sahara — sleeping in a desert camp — pack a headtorch (essential for night walks from camp to sleeping area), a warm sleeping bag liner for cold desert nights, and a bandana or buff to filter wind-blown dust.
Photography Notes
Ouarzazate and Ait Benhaddou are photographers' destinations. The light quality in the pre-Saharan south is extraordinary, particularly at golden hour (one hour before sunset) when the red-ochre walls of Ait Benhaddou glow amber. Shoot early morning or late afternoon; midday light is harsh and washes out the texture of mud-brick architecture.
A mirrorless camera or high-quality phone is sufficient. Dust is the equipment hazard: keep lens caps on when not shooting and store cameras in a sealed bag during car travel on unpaved piste roads.
Atlas Film Studios
The Atlas Film Corporation studios, 6 km from Ouarzazate, are open to visitors. The tours are informal and slightly ramshackle, but film enthusiasts will recognise sets used in Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, and Game of Thrones (the city of Yunkai is the most recognisable). Entry costs around 50 MAD. Allow 1–2 hours. Best combined with Ait Benhaddou as a half-day from Ouarzazate.
Bottom Line
Pack for desert sun and cold nights. SPF 50, a wide-brim hat, linen or cotton long sleeves, closed shoes for Ait Benhaddou, and a warm layer for evenings. OZZ airport has limited but adequate connections from Casablanca, and the road from Marrakech over the Atlas is arguably the best part of the trip. Pack light — dust gets into everything, and you will want to buy something in the Draa Valley souks.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get to Ouarzazate Morocco?▾
Ouarzazate has its own airport, OZZ, with Royal Air Maroc flights from Casablanca (approximately 1 hour). The most popular overland route is the 4-hour drive from Marrakech via the Tizi n'Tichka mountain pass (2,260m), one of the most scenic roads in Morocco. Shared taxis (grand taxis) and CTM buses run the Marrakech–Ouarzazate route daily. Many visitors combine Ouarzazate with a Marrakech trip.
What is Ouarzazate known for?▾
Ouarzazate is known as the 'Door of the Desert' and 'the Hollywood of Africa.' The Atlas Film Corporation studios — one of the largest film studios in the world — are just outside town. Movies and series filmed here include Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, The Mummy, and multiple seasons of Game of Thrones. The nearby UNESCO-listed kasbah of Ait Benhaddou is the most-photographed site in Morocco after Marrakech.
What to pack for southern Morocco?▾
Southern Morocco's desert climate requires sun protection above all: SPF 50 sunscreen, a wide-brim hat, UV-blocking sunglasses, and lightweight long-sleeve tops in natural fabrics (linen or cotton). Pack closed shoes for walking ruins like Ait Benhaddou, sandals for town, and a warm layer for evenings — temperatures drop dramatically after sunset, often from 40°C at midday to 15°C at night. Dust is ever-present; a bandana or buff is useful.
Is Ait Benhaddou worth visiting?▾
Yes — Ait Benhaddou is one of the most dramatic architectural sites in North Africa and is genuinely worth the 30km detour from Ouarzazate. The UNESCO-listed ksar (fortified village) of layered red-ochre mud brick rises from the valley floor, and the light at golden hour is extraordinary. Cross the river on foot (stepping stones or a shallow ford) to explore the inhabited lower section before climbing to the ruined upper citadel.
