Carry-On Only for Salzburg: SZG Airport, Mozart, and Packing Tips

Salzburg carry-on guide: Ryanair and easyJet at SZG, Munich train option, alpine winter packing, and the UNESCO Altstadt cobblestone streets.

Carry-On Only for Salzburg: SZG Airport, Mozart, and Packing Tips

Salzburg is one of Europe's most rewarding carry-on only destinations. The birthplace of Mozart, the setting of The Sound of Music, and home to a UNESCO World Heritage Altstadt, it combines extraordinary architecture with Alpine surroundings and some of the best classical music venues in the world. The airport is compact and close to the city, and the city itself is small enough to walk entirely — making a light bag genuinely practical. The packing adjustments depend heavily on season: winters require serious warm layers for the Alpine cold, while summers need only light clothing with a rain layer.

Salzburg Airport (SZG): Compact and Close

Salzburg W.A. Mozart Airport is one of Europe's closest major airports to a city centre — just 6 km from the Altstadt. Arrivals clear quickly due to the airport's modest scale, and the bus connection to Salzburg Hauptbahnhof takes around 20 minutes. This compact setup means you can be in the old town within 30 minutes of landing, which matters if you are arriving on a late flight.

The airport is served by Ryanair, easyJet, Eurowings, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, and Lufthansa. In winter, charter airlines add ski routes as Salzburg is a gateway to resorts including Obertauern (90 minutes) and the Ski Amadé region.

The Munich Train Alternative

Salzburg's excellent rail connections to Munich (90 minutes, multiple trains per day) make it worth considering Munich Airport as an arrival point. Flying into MUC — which has vastly more airline connections and often lower fares — and taking the direct train to Salzburg combines the frequency of a major hub with a short transfer. This is particularly useful for visitors from North America, Asia, or the Middle East connecting through a European hub carrier at Munich.

The train station in Salzburg is a short walk or tram ride from the Altstadt. Luggage storage is available at Salzburg Hauptbahnhof if you arrive before check-in.

Airline Bag Policies at SZG

Ryanair (10 kg with priority boarding; 40 × 20 × 25 cm underseat without): The standard Ryanair two-tier policy applies. Purchase priority boarding if you want overhead locker access.

easyJet (56 × 45 × 25 cm, requires fare upgrade or add-on): easyJet's cabin bag requires purchase. The personal item (45 × 36 × 20 cm) is included free on all fares.

Austrian Airlines (8 kg, 55 × 40 × 23 cm, included on Economy and above): Austrian includes a carry-on on standard Economy fares. Austrian is part of the Lufthansa Group and Miles and More loyalty programme.

Eurowings (SMART fare or add-on for cabin bag; 40 × 30 × 10 cm free): Same policy as at Stuttgart — the BASIC fare personal item is small. Budget for the SMART fare or cabin bag add-on.

British Airways (included cabin bag on most fares): BA includes the cabin bag on most economy fares. Check your specific fare conditions at booking.

What to Pack for Salzburg

Winter (December–March): warm layers are essential. Salzburg winters are Alpine-cold. Temperatures of -3 to 2°C are typical, with wind chill making exposed areas — the fortress walkways, the Mirabell Gardens — feel colder. The Altstadt cobblestones become icy and treacherous after snowfall. Pack:

  • Thermal base layers (merino wool preferred for warmth-to-weight ratio)
  • Insulating mid-layer: down jacket or heavyweight fleece
  • Waterproof outer layer
  • Warm hat, gloves, and scarf
  • Waterproof ankle boots with grippy soles — high heels and thin-soled shoes are dangerous on icy Salzburg cobblestones

Summer (June–August): light layers with rain cover. Summer temperatures reach 22–27°C and the city is busy with festival visitors. Light clothing works well for the days. Pack:

  • Light summer clothing for day sightseeing
  • A compact waterproof layer for afternoon Alpine thunderstorms
  • Comfortable walking shoes for the Altstadt cobblestones
  • One smart outfit for concerts at the Mozarteum or Felsenreitschule

Smart evening outfit: Salzburg has a strong concert culture. The Salzburg Festival (late July–August) is one of the world's premier classical music events. Even outside festival season, performances at the Mozarteum and the fortress itself reward a smarter outfit — a collared shirt or light dress alongside your walking clothes.

The UNESCO Altstadt

Salzburg's Altstadt is compact and almost entirely pedestrianised. The entire Old Town is UNESCO World Heritage listed for its baroque architecture.

Getreidegasse: The narrow old town shopping street, famous for guild signs rather than modern signage. Mozart was born at number 9 in 1756; the building is now a museum.

Mirabell Gardens: The formal Baroque gardens of Schloss Mirabell were used for the "Do Re Mi" scene in The Sound of Music. Entry is free.

Hellbrunn Palace: Around 5 km south of the centre, famous for its 17th-century trick fountains — jets designed to soak unsuspecting guests. The grounds also include the Sound of Music gazebo. Fountain tour is ticketed; grounds are free.

Getting Around

The Altstadt is fully walkable. For the Hohensalzburg Fortress, the Festungsbahn cable car is included in the entry ticket. For Hellbrunn, bus line 25 runs from the centre. Day trips to Hallstatt (90 minutes) and Berchtesgaden in Germany (30 minutes) are straightforward.

Currency is Euro. Smaller market stalls and traditional restaurants sometimes prefer cash.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Salzburg Airport from the city centre?

Salzburg W.A. Mozart Airport (SZG) is just 6 km from the city centre — one of the closest major airports to a European city centre. Bus lines connect the airport to the central station (Salzburg Hauptbahnhof) in around 20 minutes. Taxis take around 10–15 minutes. The compact airport size makes arrivals and departures fast compared to larger hubs.

Can I reach Salzburg by train from Munich?

Yes. The Munich to Salzburg rail journey takes around 1 hour 30 minutes on direct services and runs frequently throughout the day. This makes Salzburg very accessible from Munich Airport (MUC) — flying to Munich and taking the train to Salzburg is a viable and sometimes cheaper alternative to flying directly into SZG, especially for visitors from long-haul origins transiting Munich.

What is the Hohensalzburg Fortress?

Hohensalzburg Fortress is Austria's largest medieval castle and one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Europe. It stands on the Festungsberg hill overlooking Salzburg's Altstadt and dates from 1077. Access is by a short cable car (Festungsbahn) or by foot up a steep path. The cable car is included in the fortress entry ticket. Views over the Altstadt and the Alps from the fortress walls are exceptional.

What should I pack for Salzburg in winter?

Salzburg winters are genuinely cold — temperatures typically between -3 and 2°C from December through February, with frequent snowfall. Pack thermal base layers, a warm insulating mid-layer (down jacket or thick fleece), waterproof outer layer, warm socks, and waterproof boots with grip for icy cobblestones. The Altstadt cobblestones become slippery with snow and ice — sole grip is essential.

When is Salzburg's Christmas market?

Salzburg's Christkindlmarkt on Domplatz runs from late November through 24 December and is considered one of Austria's most beautiful Christmas markets. The adjacent Advent market at Hellbrunn Palace — around 5 km from the centre — is a charming complementary market in the palace grounds, with the famous trick fountains closed for the season but the setting remaining atmospheric.
