Carry-On Packing Guide for a Victoria Falls Trip
Pack smart for Victoria Falls: waterproof essentials, safari neutrals, and what to know before you fly into LVI or VFA.
Carry-On Packing Guide for a Victoria Falls Trip
Victoria Falls is one of the natural wonders of the world — a roaring curtain of water more than 1,700 metres wide plunging over 100 metres into the Zambezi Gorge. It straddles the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, which means your trip here often combines two countries, a range of activities from wildlife safaris to extreme sports, and one very specific packing challenge: you will get wet.
Getting There
The two main airports are Livingstone Airport (LVI) in Zambia (about 12km from the falls) and Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) in Zimbabwe (under 20 minutes away). Both handle connections from Johannesburg (JNB), Cape Town (CPT), and Nairobi (NBO). If you plan to cross between both countries, fly into one and out of the other to avoid backtracking.
The KAZA UniVisa is the easiest option for most visitors — a single visa covering both Zambia and Zimbabwe, available on arrival. Check current eligibility before you travel, as covered nationalities do change.
The Two Sides: Zimbabwe vs Zambia
Zimbabwe Side (Victoria Falls Town)
The Rainforest Walk is the signature experience here: a series of viewpoints along the gorge's edge that puts you face-to-face with the full width of the falls. During high water season (roughly February to June), the spray is so intense that you will be completely soaked before you reach the second viewpoint. Even during dry season, some sections still drench you. This is not rain — it is a warm, mist-like downpour that saturates everything.
Pack your electronics in a waterproof dry bag and wear clothes you are happy to walk around wet afterward.
Zambia Side (Livingstone)
Livingstone is the adventure hub. Devil's Pool is the standout attraction — a natural rock pool at the very lip of the falls where you can swim during low water season (roughly August to December when water levels are lower). Access is via Livingstone Island, booked through the Royal Livingstone Hotel. If swimming on the edge of a 100-metre drop is on your bucket list, plan your trip dates around this window.
Activities to Pack For
Rainforest Walk (Zimbabwe): Waterproof bag, waterproof phone case or dry pouch, quick-dry clothing. Your camera's weather sealing will be tested here.
Devil's Pool (Zambia): Swimwear, rash guard, water shoes or sandals with a heel strap. You will be in the water and on wet rocks.
White-water rafting on the Zambezi: Most operators provide helmets and life jackets. Bring a change of clothes in a dry bag. Wear swimwear or board shorts underneath any provided wetsuit.
Bungee jumping from Victoria Falls Bridge: The 111-metre drop from the bridge between Zimbabwe and Zambia is one of the world's great bungee jumps. You jump in whatever you are wearing — secure everything (glasses, hats, loose items) in advance.
Sunset Zambezi cruise: Smarter casual — light linen trousers or a sundress, a light cardigan or fleece for the breeze on the water.
Chobe National Park (Botswana): About a three-hour drive from Livingstone or Victoria Falls town. A day trip to Chobe is excellent for elephant sightings — among the largest elephant concentrations in Africa. Wear safari neutrals.
What to Pack
Waterproof Essentials (carry-on priority)
- Dry bag or waterproof rucksack — carry your camera and valuables in this during the Rainforest Walk
- Waterproof phone pouch — attach to a lanyard around your neck
- Two sets of quick-dry clothes — dedicated Rainforest Walk outfits you are comfortable wearing soaked
Safari and Activity Clothing
- Khaki, olive, beige, brown — neutral tones for wildlife activities; avoid bright colors
- Long-sleeve shirts — sun and insect protection; light fabric
- Lightweight trousers or zip-off hiking pants — versatile across activities
- Fleece or light down jacket — evenings near the Zambezi can be cool, especially June to August
- Swimwear — multiple sets if you plan Devil's Pool, rafting, and cruise
Footwear
- Sturdy walking shoes or trail runners — Rainforest Walk paths are slippery
- Water sandals with heel strap — Devil's Pool and rafting
- Flip flops — camp and hotel use
Health and Sundries
- Antimalarials — Victoria Falls is a malaria zone; consult a travel clinic at least two weeks before departure
- DEET insect repellent (50%+) — essential at dawn and dusk
- Sunscreen (high SPF) — the spray mist does not protect you from the sun above
- Rehydration sachets — heat and activity levels can deplete you quickly
Electronics
- Camera with weather sealing — worth it here more than almost anywhere
- Universal power adapter — Zimbabwe uses type G (UK plug); Zambia uses type G and type C
- Portable power bank — long days between outlets
Carry-On Strategy
Victoria Falls trips often involve connecting through Johannesburg on airlines like FlySafair, Airlink, or South African Airways. Regional African carriers frequently have stricter carry-on weight limits (7kg is common on Airlink). Weigh your bag before the first leg.
Pack your dry bag, waterproof phone pouch, and any camera gear in your carry-on — checked luggage delays happen, and you do not want to arrive at the Rainforest Walk without your equipment. Antimalarials and any prescription medication also belong in your carry-on.
When to Go
- High water / heavy spray (February to June): Most dramatic views and loudest falls; guarantee of getting soaked on Rainforest Walk
- Lower water / Devil's Pool season (August to December): Clearer visibility of the rock face; Devil's Pool swims available from August; better wildlife viewing as animals gather at water sources
- Shoulder season (July): Good compromise — still strong flow, Devil's Pool season beginning
Frequently asked questions
Which side of Victoria Falls is better to visit?▾
Both sides offer spectacular views. The Zimbabwe side (Rainforest Walk) gives broader panoramic access to the main curtain of the falls. The Zambia side offers the famous Devil's Pool swim at the edge of the falls and some unique vantage points from Livingstone Island. Ideally, visit both using the KAZA UniVisa.
What to pack for Victoria Falls?▾
Pack two sets of waterproof walking clothes for the Rainforest Walk (you will get soaked), safari-neutral clothing in khaki and olive for wildlife activities, a waterproof dry bag for your camera and phone, reef shoes or quick-dry footwear, sunscreen, and light layers for cool evenings near the Zambezi.
Do I get wet visiting Victoria Falls?▾
Yes, especially on the Zimbabwe side Rainforest Walk during high water season (February to June), you will be drenched within minutes regardless of the weather. Even during dry season the spray can be heavy near the main viewing points. A waterproof bag and waterproof phone case are essential, not optional.
Which airport is closest to Victoria Falls?▾
Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) in Zimbabwe is the most convenient, sitting less than 20 minutes from the falls. Livingstone Airport (LVI) in Zambia is about 12km from the falls and is a good option if you are basing yourself on the Zambia side. Both airports have connections from Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Nairobi.
