Carry-On Only for Colombia: Avianca, Wingo, and Prop Plane Rules
Colombia's domestic air network connects Bogotá to Medellín, Cartagena, Cali, Santa Marta, and dozens of smaller destinations efficiently — but the aircraft and policies vary enormously between carriers. Carry-on only is very manageable on the main Avianca routes, and requires more planning for budget carriers and small prop plane legs.
Know Your Carrier Before You Pack
Avianca is the most accommodating option for carry-on travellers. Its 10 kg allowance and Airbus A320 fleet on trunk routes between Bogotá (BOG), Medellín (MDE/EOH), Cali (CLO), and Cartagena (CTG) means you have reasonable overhead bin space and generally relaxed enforcement on these routes.
LATAM Colombia allows 8 kg in the cabin. On major routes it operates similarly to Avianca, but 8 kg is a tighter target — pack accordingly.
Wingo is a low-cost carrier owned by Copa Airlines. Its base fares include only a personal item under the seat. A cabin bag is a paid add-on. If you book Wingo and forget to add the bag at purchase, you will pay a higher gate fee. Always add the bag online when booking.
EasyFly connects smaller Colombian cities and operates regional prop planes and smaller aircraft. Its 7 kg limit is strictly enforced, and overhead storage on smaller aircraft is sometimes non-existent — your bag may go in the hold regardless. Travel light on any EasyFly segment.
Bogotá vs Coast Packing: Two Climates in One Bag
This is the central packing challenge for a multi-city Colombia itinerary.
For the Caribbean coast (Cartagena, Santa Marta, Tayrona):
- Lightweight linen or moisture-wicking shirts — 3 is sufficient with daily handwashing possible
- Light trousers or shorts
- Sandals that work for beach and town
- High-factor SPF (UV is intense)
- Reef-safe sunscreen if visiting Tayrona or any marine reserve
For Bogotá (and Medellín, which sits at 1,495 m and is spring-like year-round):
- Add one fleece or light jacket for evenings
- Comfortable walking shoes for the city — the streets in La Candelaria and Laureles are uneven
- One slightly smarter layer for restaurants and nightlife in El Poblado
The trick: keep coast clothing minimal and lightweight, and your Bogotá layer (one jacket, one mid-weight top) doubles for cool Medellín evenings. You do not need a separate Bogotá wardrobe.
Coffee as a Carry-On Souvenir
Whole-bean coffee is one of the best souvenirs you can carry out of Colombia, and it is entirely carry-on compatible. It's a solid — not a liquid — so the 100 ml liquids rule doesn't apply. Single-origin coffees from Huila, Nariño, and Antioquia departments are available at specialty shops throughout Bogotá and Medellín.
Buy vacuum-sealed bags where possible as they compress well. Check your destination country's agricultural import rules — commercially sealed coffee clears customs in most countries, but it's worth verifying if you're returning to Australia or New Zealand, which have stricter biosecurity rules.
Prop Plane Segments: What to Expect
If your Colombia itinerary includes smaller destinations — Nuquí on the Pacific coast, Capurganá near the Panama border, or Mompox in the lowlands — you will likely fly on a small prop aircraft operated by EasyFly or a regional charter. On these flights:
- Overhead space is minimal or non-existent
- Your bag almost certainly goes in the hold, even if it meets cabin standards
- Pack any fragile or valuable items in your personal item that goes under the seat
- Keep medication, electronics, and documents on your person
Weight is more critical than size on these routes. A soft-sided bag that can be compressed or adjusted when the crew needs to fit it in a small hold compartment is preferable to a rigid shell.
Bag Security in Cities
Colombia's major tourist zones are safe for most visitors, but petty opportunism occurs in crowded spaces. Practical habits:
- Keep your bag in front of you on TransMilenio (Bogotá's bus rapid transit) and the Medellín Metro
- Don't leave your bag on the back of a chair in outdoor cafes
- Use your hotel safe for your passport — carry a photocopy
- A plain, non-branded bag in a neutral colour draws less attention than a bright travel-specific bag with visible brand logos
What to Carry On vs Ship Home
If you buy artisan goods, textiles, or significant quantities of coffee, the weight adds up quickly. Weigh your bag before airport departure — a small luggage scale (100 g) is worth packing. Colombian airports do have cargo shipping services for oversized items, but they are expensive and slow for international destinations. It's simpler to mail purchases from a Servientrega or Deprisa branch in the city before you leave.
Frequently asked questions
Does Wingo include a free carry-on on its base fare?▾
No. Wingo's base fares include only a small personal item that fits under the seat in front of you (max 40 × 35 × 25 cm). A full-size cabin bag must be added to your booking as an extra. Check Wingo's website when booking and add the bag fee upfront — buying it at the gate costs significantly more. If you are mixing Avianca and Wingo legs on the same itinerary, budget for Wingo's add-on fee.
How strict are Colombian domestic carriers about carry-on weight and size?▾
Stricter than many travellers expect, particularly on smaller prop plane routes. EasyFly operates ATR 42 and Cessna Caravan aircraft on routes to destinations such as Nuquí, Bahía Solano, and Mompox. Overhead storage on these aircraft is minimal. EasyFly enforces its 7 kg limit and may require you to gate-check even a compliant bag if the plane is full. Avianca is more relaxed on its Airbus routes between Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, and Cartagena.
Can I pack whole-bean coffee as a carry-on souvenir from Colombia?▾
Yes. Whole-bean and ground coffee are solid items and are not subject to the liquids restriction. You can pack as much coffee as your weight allowance permits. Vacuum-sealed bags from coffee shops in Medellín's El Poblado or Bogotá's La Candelaria neighbourhood travel well. Be aware that some destination countries have restrictions on agricultural products — check your destination's customs rules, though commercially sealed coffee is generally permitted.
What is the altitude difference between Bogotá and Cartagena?▾
Bogotá sits at 2,600 m and has a cool, temperate climate year-round (average 14–18°C). Cartagena is at sea level with tropical heat and humidity (28–34°C). If your Colombia itinerary includes both cities, you need two distinct clothing strategies in the same bag. Pack lightweight breathable tops for the coast and add one fleece or light jacket for Bogotá evenings — you will not need a heavy coat.
Is it safe to keep your carry-on bag on you in Colombian cities?▾
Stay aware in busy tourist areas in Cartagena's old city, La Candelaria in Bogotá, and on public transport. Keep your bag in front of you in crowded spaces and avoid displaying expensive electronics openly. Most popular tourist zones are well-patrolled, but petty theft does occur. A low-profile bag without visible brand logos reduces attention. Use hotel safes for passports and backup cash.
