Carry-On Packing List for Da Nang: Vietnam Beach

Pack carry-on only for Da Nang. VietJet enforces 7 kg strictly. Beach packing tips, Hoi An day trips, and central Vietnam's split-season climate.

Carry-On Packing List for Da Nang: Vietnam Beach

Da Nang is Vietnam's third-largest city and its great beach destination: 30 km of My Khe beach, a year-round warm climate in its dry season, and a central location that puts two UNESCO World Heritage sites — Hoi An and Hue — within easy reach. The city is served by an international airport with excellent regional connections, and it is dominated by budget airlines that enforce their carry-on rules strictly. This guide covers the airline landscape, the climate, and what to pack for this part of central Vietnam.

Airline Carry-On Quick Reference

Da Nang International Airport (DAD) is well-served by regional Asian carriers and Vietnamese budget airlines.

Bamboo Airways56 × 36 × 23 cm7 kgBudget rules; check current policy
Scoot (Jetstar Asia)54 × 38 × 23 cm10 kgMust purchase carry-on on base fares
Korean Air (seasonal)55 × 40 × 20 cm12 kgBusiness-friendly allowance

VietJet Air and Bamboo Airways are the dominant domestic and regional carriers. Both enforce their 7 kg carry-on limits. If you are flying between cities within Vietnam (Hanoi–Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh–Da Nang), budget for the 7 kg ceiling or pay for a checked bag at the time of booking (always cheaper in advance than at the airport).

Central Vietnam's Split Climate

This is the most important planning factor for Da Nang. Central Vietnam has a distinct microclimate that differs from both the north (Hanoi) and the south (Ho Chi Minh City).

Dry and beach season (April–August): Warm, sunny, and ideal. Temperatures of 28–35°C. Sea conditions are good for swimming at My Khe and An Bang beaches. UV levels are intense — sunscreen is essential.

Shoulder period (February–March): Cooler than summer (20–25°C) and mostly dry. Good visibility and pleasant temperatures for sightseeing in Hoi An and Hue. The sea may be rougher.

Rainy and typhoon season (September–January): This is the risk period. October and November in particular can bring heavy rainfall, occasional typhoons (tropical cyclones), and flooding in low-lying areas like Hoi An's Old Town. Travel insurance is strongly advisable. If visiting during this period, pack a light rain jacket.

Beach Packing

Da Nang's My Khe beach is approximately 30 km long and a genuine world-class beach. Pack accordingly:

  • Swimwear — two sets so one is always dry
  • Reef-safe sunscreen — UV intensity at this latitude is high; reef-safe products are increasingly required at Vietnamese beach destinations
  • Rash guard or lightweight long-sleeved top for extended sun exposure
  • Sarong or coverup for moving between the beach and town or restaurants
  • Flip-flops for beach use (keep shoes for walking and riding)
  • Water shoes if you plan to snorkel or explore rocky areas at Cham Islands

Hoi An Day Trip (Essential)

Hoi An is 30 km south of Da Nang — 30–45 minutes by Grab taxi (150,000–200,000 VND). It is the most atmospheric destination in central Vietnam: a UNESCO World Heritage ancient trading port with beautifully preserved 15th–18th century architecture, colourful lanterns, a vibrant night market, and some of the best food in Vietnam.

For the Hoi An day trip, pack light:

  • Comfortable walking shoes (the Old Town is flat and best explored on foot)
  • A small daypack or shoulder bag
  • Cash (most market stalls and tailor shops are cash-preferred)
  • Camera

The tailoring question: Hoi An is globally famous for custom-made clothing. Tailors can produce quality items in 24–72 hours. If you want to commission clothes, you need to stay 3–4 days, not just day-trip. On a day trip, you can browse fabrics and take measurements for items that can be shipped home.

Hue Day Trip

Hue is 100 km north of Da Nang — approximately 1.5 hours by bus, minivan, or train. It was Vietnam's imperial capital until 1945 and contains the Imperial Citadel, the Forbidden Purple City, and royal tombs spread across the surrounding hills.

For a Hue day trip:

  • Start early (7–8 am) to get the most time there
  • Wear comfortable shoes — the Imperial Citadel site is extensive
  • Bring a light layer for air-conditioned buses or trains

The Marble Mountains and Motorbike Culture

The Marble Mountains are a cluster of five limestone hills just south of Da Nang, laced with caves and Buddhist shrines. The steps to the summit are steep — wear shoes with grip. It is a half-day excursion from Da Nang, easily combined with a beach afternoon.

Motorbikes are how Da Nang and Hoi An move. You can rent a semi-automatic motorbike easily in Da Nang if you have experience, or hire a xe om (motorbike taxi) or use Grab's motorbike option (cheaper than Grab Car for short distances). Keep bags small and close when on a motorbike.

What to Pack

Essentials

  • Swimwear (two sets)
  • Lightweight, breathable clothing — linen, cotton, light synthetics
  • One smart-casual outfit for dinner (Da Nang has some excellent restaurants)
  • Reef-safe sunscreen (high SPF)
  • Compact folding umbrella (useful year-round)
  • Comfortable walking shoes for day trips
  • Flip-flops for beach and casual use
  • Small daypack for excursions

Consider Bringing

  • Insect repellent (DEET-based or equivalent) — mosquitoes are present and dengue is a risk
  • A light rain jacket if travelling September–January
  • A dry bag or waterproof pouch for beach days and boat trips

Leave Behind

  • Heavy clothing — you will not need it April–September
  • Full rain gear — a compact umbrella handles most rain
  • Multiple pairs of shoes — one comfortable walking shoe and one pair of flip-flops covers Da Nang completely

The Bottom Line

Da Nang is a beach-forward packing list. The two pillars are sun protection and comfortable footwear for day trips to Hoi An and Hue. Budget carriers dominate, so treat 7 kg seriously if flying VietJet or Bamboo — or purchase a checked allowance at booking time and bring whatever you want. The city is well-supplied with pharmacies and markets, so toiletries and beach gear bought locally are a reasonable alternative to packing them.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Da Nang?

April to August is the dry beach season with warm, sunny weather ideal for swimming and outdoor activities. September to January brings typhoon risk and heavy rain which can cause flooding in low-lying areas. February and March are cooler and generally pleasant.

Is Da Nang or Hoi An better to stay in?

Da Nang has the better beaches and more modern hotel infrastructure. Hoi An is the more atmospheric UNESCO heritage destination. Most visitors base in Da Nang and day-trip to Hoi An, or split time between both towns.

How strict is VietJet Air on carry-on baggage?

Very strict. VietJet Air enforces a 7 kg carry-on limit and dimensions of 56 × 36 × 23 cm. Staff weigh bags at check-in and at the gate, and oversized or overweight bags must be checked for a fee. Purchase a checked bag allowance if you need it.

How far is Hoi An from Da Nang?

Approximately 30 km south, roughly 30–45 minutes by taxi or Grab car. A Grab taxi is the most convenient option and costs around 150,000–200,000 VND each way.

Can I get custom clothes made in Hoi An on a day trip from Da Nang?

Only if you allow at least two to three days for fittings. Most tailors in Hoi An need at minimum 24–48 hours per item, with one or two fitting sessions. A day trip is too short for custom tailoring — you need to base yourself nearby for several days.
