How to Pack a Carry-On for a Beach Vacation (5–7 Days)

A week at the beach is one of the most carry-on-friendly trips you can take. You need fewer heavy layers, shoes are minimal, and quick-dry fabrics mean you can re-wear and rewash easily. With a little strategy, a 5–7 day beach trip fits comfortably in a single carry-on bag — even on budget airlines with tight size limits.

Choosing Your Bag

For beach routes dominated by Spirit, Frontier, and Ryanair, carry-on fees for overhead bags can add $50–80 to your round-trip cost. A better strategy is to travel with a personal item only — a bag that fits under the seat in front and flies free on every airline.

A 25–30 L backpack or large tote bag (meeting dimensions around 45 × 35 × 20 cm) works well for most beach trips. Soft-sided bags compress to fit even when full, unlike rigid suitcases.

If you're willing to pay for carry-on overhead access, a 40 L soft backpack gives you substantially more room while still meeting most airline size limits.

• Solid sunscreen sticks: Several brands (Babo Botanicals, All Good, EltaMD) make solid SPF sticks that bypass liquid rules entirely. Highly recommended.
• Reef-safe formulas: If travelling to Hawaii or many Caribbean destinations, reef-safe sunscreen is legally required. Look for mineral-based (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) sticks.
• Buy at destination: Most beach towns sell sunscreen; buying a full-size bottle there and leaving it saves space and avoids packing liquid at all.
• 100 ml containers: If you insist on liquid sunscreen, decant into a 100 ml container and count it in your 1-litre bag.

Other liquids: travel-size shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in 100 ml or smaller containers. Consider shampoo bars to reduce liquid burden entirely.

Extras

• Polarised sunglasses (in a semi-rigid case to protect the lenses)
• Small dry bag or zip-lock for wet swimwear
• Portable sunscreen applicator spray (check size — must be under 100 ml)

Most beach totes and small drawstring bags meet personal item dimensions when not stuffed to the brim. Travelling with your carry-on in the overhead and a beach bag as your personal item gives you a ready-to-go beach kit the moment you land — no unpacking required.

Pack the beach bag with: sunglasses, sunscreen, one swimsuit, coverup, flip-flops, and a paperback or e-reader. This becomes your day bag at the destination.

Spirit Airlines (US beach routes: Cancun, Nassau, Punta Cana, Fort Lauderdale)

• Personal item only (free): max 45 × 35 × 20 cm
