Carry-On Only for Dubai: Emirates Rules, DXB Airport, and Packing Tips

Dubai carry-on guide: Emirates 7 kg economy limit, flydubai and Air Arabia policies, DXB airport tips, heat packing, and modest dress for malls and mosques.

Carry-On Only for Dubai: Emirates Rules, DXB Airport, and Packing Tips

Dubai is one of the world's fastest-growing travel hubs, and Emirates is the carrier that connects most of it. The challenge for carry-on only travelers is Emirates' 7 kg economy weight limit — one of the stricter allowances among major longhaul carriers. Getting carry-on only travel right on Emirates requires careful bag selection and smart packing, but it is entirely achievable. The city itself packs a remarkable range of experiences into a compact, modern geography that is easy to navigate.

Emirates: 7 kg Limit — Strict and Enforced

Emirates allows one cabin bag (55 × 38 × 20 cm) up to 7 kg in economy class, plus one personal item (laptop bag, handbag, or small rucksack). The 7 kg limit is one of the strictest among major full-service carriers — by comparison, British Airways, Lufthansa, and United impose no weight limit at all.

Emirates enforces this limit. At Dubai International Airport, staff weigh bags at security and at the gate. If your bag exceeds 7 kg, you will be asked to check it in. The checking-in fee applied at the gate is typically higher than the pre-paid checked bag fee, so if you know your bag will be over 7 kg, it is better to check it in at the counter and pre-pay.

To stay within 7 kg comfortably, choose a lightweight carry-on bag (ideally under 1.5 kg empty) and pack selectively. Carry your heaviest items — a jacket, thick-soled shoes, a laptop — on your person through the airport if weight is tight. Items worn on your body are not weighed.

Flydubai and Air Arabia: Budget Carriers at DXB

Flydubai, the low-cost subsidiary of Emirates, operates from Terminal 2 at DXB. Its base Value fares do not include a full carry-on bag. A cabin bag allowance must be added during booking or purchased later at higher cost. When included, the flydubai cabin bag allowance is 7 kg — consistent with Emirates economy.

Air Arabia operates from Sharjah Airport (SHJ), approximately 25 km from central Dubai. Its base fares also do not include a carry-on beyond a small personal item. A cabin bag allowance of up to 7 kg can be added. Air Arabia is a popular choice for budget regional routes across the Middle East and South Asia, and Sharjah Airport is smaller and faster to navigate than DXB, though less convenient for central Dubai stays.

Dubai International Airport (DXB): One of the World's Largest

Dubai International is the world's busiest international airport by passenger volume. Its scale is significant and matters for planning:

Three terminals: Terminal 1 handles most other international carriers. Terminal 2 handles flydubai and some regional carriers. Terminal 3 is the dedicated Emirates terminal — at over 1.7 million square metres, it is one of the largest airport buildings in the world. Terminals 1 and 3 are connected by an underground people mover; Terminal 2 is separate.

Three concourses in T3: Terminal 3 has Concourses A, B, and C. The transit between concourses involves an underground automated rail system. Walking distances from a gate in Concourse C to a gate in Concourse A can take 20–30 minutes including the rail ride.

Allow 3 hours for international connections: Even with efficient security — DXB is generally well-organized — the distances involved at T3 mean you need time. Emirates recommends 90 minutes as a minimum connection time, but 3 hours allows for slow security, a stop at duty-free, and a comfortable walk to the gate.

Duty-free: Dubai International has one of the world's largest airport duty-free operations. It is a legitimate place to purchase full-size liquids (perfume, alcohol, skincare) after security — these travel in a sealed duty-free bag and are permitted through security at most destinations. Check the rules at your destination airport before purchasing.

Packing for Dubai

Lightweight, breathable clothing for extreme heat: Dubai summer temperatures exceed 40°C (104°F) outdoors. Even in the cooler winter months (December–February), daytime temperatures reach 20–25°C. Pack lightweight cotton or linen clothing that breathes in heat. Avoid dark colours that absorb heat in outdoor environments.

Modest clothing for malls, mosques, and souks: Dubai is a cosmopolitan city with a permissive atmosphere in hotels, beach clubs, and many restaurants. But shopping malls, the Gold Souk, the Spice Souk, and mosques require covered shoulders and knees. Pack at least one or two outfits that work for these settings — a lightweight linen shirt or a maxi dress covers the requirement without adding weight.

Swimwear: Almost every hotel in Dubai has a pool, and beach access (Jumeirah Beach, Kite Beach, JBR Beach) is excellent. Pack swimwear even if beach access is not your primary focus — outdoor pool time in the evenings is one of the most pleasant ways to spend time in Dubai.

One evening outfit for nicer restaurants: Dubai's dining scene ranges from casual street food in Al Quoz to fine dining at the Burj Al Arab and rooftop restaurants on the Palm. A clean, simple dress or shirt and trousers handles most upscale dinner settings.

Sunscreen within liquid limits: Carry sunscreen in containers of 100 ml or under. High-factor sunscreen is available in Dubai at Boots, Life Pharmacy, and supermarkets in malls, so you can purchase on arrival or top up as needed.

Getting Around Dubai

Dubai's Metro covers the main tourist corridor — the Red Line runs from the Airport to Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Dubai Marina, and the Expo City area. The Green Line reaches Deira, the Gold Souk, and older parts of the city. For areas off the Metro (Palm Jumeirah, JBR, and many hotels), taxis and Careem (the regional rideshare app) are practical and inexpensive by international standards.

Frequently asked questions

What is Emirates' carry-on weight limit in economy?

Emirates allows one cabin bag of up to 55 × 38 × 20 cm and 7 kg in economy class. This is a strict limit and Emirates is known for enforcing it at Dubai International Airport. You may also bring one small personal item such as a laptop bag or handbag. If your cabin bag exceeds 7 kg, staff at DXB security and at the gate may ask you to check it in for a fee. Weigh your bag before traveling.

Does flydubai include a carry-on bag in the base fare?

No. Flydubai's base fares (Value fares) do not include a cabin bag beyond a small personal item. A cabin bag allowance must be purchased as an add-on or is included in higher fare classes (Basic Plus, Lite, Smart, or Flex). The carry-on allowance when purchased is typically 7 kg. Check your booking confirmation for what is included in your specific fare.

How much time should I allow for connections at Dubai International (DXB)?

For international connections at DXB, Emirates recommends a minimum of 90 minutes for connecting flights, but 3 hours is more comfortable given the airport's size. Dubai International is one of the world's largest and busiest airports. Terminal 3 alone spans multiple concourses (A, B, and C) connected by an underground train. Walking distances between arrival gates and departure gates can exceed 20 minutes.

What should I wear in Dubai malls and mosques?

Dubai is a modern city with a generally tolerant dress code in hotels, beach clubs, and many tourist areas. However, shopping malls and public spaces require covered shoulders and knees — avoid sleeveless tops and very short shorts or skirts in these environments. Mosques require full coverage for both men and women, and women will need a headscarf. Pack at least one set of modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees for excursions to malls, souks, and cultural sites.

Is sunscreen subject to liquid rules on flights to Dubai?

Yes. Sunscreen in liquid or cream form counts toward the 100 ml per container and 1-litre bag liquid limit at all airports. Pack sunscreen in containers of 100 ml or under, or use a solid sunscreen stick which typically does not count as a liquid. High-factor sunscreen (SPF 50 or above) is widely available at pharmacies throughout Dubai, including Boots and Life Pharmacy outlets in malls, so you can purchase on arrival if needed.
