DOH: Hamad International Airport

Hamad International Airport is routinely ranked the world's best airport and was the first airport to earn a five-star Skytrax rating. The terminal is large but straightforward to navigate, and it has genuine attractions beyond shopping:

Lounge access: Confirm the lounge named in your ticket or membership benefit. Do not infer Al Mourjan access solely from a Business label or Privilege Club tier.

The ORYX pool and gym inside the terminal is available for transit passengers to use for a fee. For long layovers of 6 hours or more, a swim and shower makes a significant difference.

Duty-free shopping at DOH is extensive and genuinely competitive on price for perfume, electronics, and tobacco. Qatar's airport duty-free is operated at scale and tends to offer better prices than most European hubs.

Metro connection. The Doha Metro Red Line connects Hamad Airport to central Doha in around 25 minutes. It is clean, modern, and inexpensive — a far better option than a taxi for independent travellers.

Packing for Doha

Doha has a desert climate. Summers (May through September) are brutally hot — temperatures regularly exceed 40°C with high humidity from the Gulf. Winter months (November through February) are genuinely pleasant, with temperatures in the mid-20s. The air conditioning inside every building is very aggressive.

Modest coverage at key sites. The Museum of Islamic Art and Souq Waqif are the two must-visit destinations in central Doha. The museum has no strict dress code, but Souq Waqif and mosques require modest clothing — covered shoulders and knees as a minimum, and an abaya for women entering mosques. Pack a light scarf that doubles as a cover for the shoulders.

Light layers for indoors. Qatar's air conditioning standards mean interiors feel cold against the outdoor heat. A thin layer — a light cardigan or long-sleeved linen shirt — is worth including even in summer.

Desert evenings. In winter, evenings at The Pearl or the waterfront corniche can be genuinely cool. Pack one medium layer if travelling between October and March.

Souq Waqif and Old Doha

Souq Waqif is the most atmospheric part of central Doha: a restored traditional market with spice shops, falconry supply stores, restaurants, and shisha cafes on the upper floors. It is one of the genuinely distinctive experiences in the Gulf and worth at least half a day. Dress modestly here — open shoulders and short skirts attract unwanted attention even in 40-degree heat.

Lusail Marina, a short metro ride north of central Doha, is the opposite end of the spectrum: a purpose-built waterfront district with outdoor restaurants, yacht berths, and a more relaxed dress atmosphere. It was one of the main venues during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Layover Tips for DOH

Qatar Airways is famous for routing global flights through Doha, and long layovers are common. If your layover exceeds 5 hours, the airport's facilities make staying airside comfortable. For layovers of 8 hours or more, consider the Doha stopover visa (often free for Qatar Airways transit passengers) to get out and see the city. The museum and Souq Waqif are each under 20 minutes from the airport by metro.
