Carry-On Only for Las Vegas: Airlines, LAS, and Packing Tips

Las Vegas carry-on guide: Southwest bags fly free, Spirit/Frontier/Allegiant fees, LAS airport tips, and what to pack for the Strip.

Carry-On Only for Las Vegas: Airlines, LAS, and Packing Tips

Las Vegas is one of the most carry-on-friendly destinations in the United States — not because of what you pack but because of how you travel once you land. Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) is efficient and compact, the taxi and rideshare infrastructure is excellent, and every casino resort has a bag check desk at the front if you arrive before your room is ready. A well-packed carry-on is all you need for most Vegas trips of three to five days.

Airlines Flying to Las Vegas

Southwest Airlines is the standout choice for Las Vegas carry-on travel. Southwest's bags fly free policy covers two free checked bags and includes a carry-on and personal item on every fare, with no weight limits. Southwest operates heavily out of LAS and has dozens of daily flights from most major US cities.

Delta, United, and American all serve Las Vegas on standard economy fares with one free carry-on (22 × 14 × 9 inches) plus a personal item and no weight limit. Basic economy fares on these carriers restrict overhead bin access — check your fare type before you arrive.

Spirit, Frontier, and Allegiant each serve LAS heavily and are popular for cheap Vegas flights. All three are ultra-low-cost carriers that charge for carry-on bags above the seat as a separate fee. The personal item (which fits under the seat) is free. Size limits vary by carrier — Spirit allows up to 18 × 14 × 8 inches as a personal item, Frontier 18 × 14 × 8 inches, and Allegiant 7 × 15 × 16 inches. If your bag qualifies as a personal item on these airlines, your Vegas trip can genuinely be bag-fee free. If not, buy the carry-on add-on at booking.

LAS: A Pleasantly Efficient Airport

Harry Reid International is one of the smoother large US airports to move through. The two main terminals (Terminal 1 for most domestic flights and Terminal 3 for Spirit, international flights, and select carriers) are organized clearly. Security queues run faster here than at comparable airports — LAS consistently ranks as one of the more efficient hubs in TSA data. A standard domestic arrival, clearing the terminal, and reaching a rideshare or taxi takes about 20 minutes.

Getting from LAS to the Strip is fast: rideshare and taxis take roughly 10 to 15 minutes to most major Strip properties. The Las Vegas Convention Center Loop (a tunnel system) connects some Strip properties directly to the airport area, but for most travelers the rideshare pickup zone outside baggage claim is the simplest option.

Packing for Las Vegas

One nicer outfit for a show or club — or buy it there. Las Vegas has among the best shopping for occasion wear of any US city, with the Fashion Show Mall on the Strip and outlet centers nearby. If you are tight on space, pack a versatile base and pick up a going-out top or dress in Vegas for less than the checked-bag fee you would pay anyway. Club and show attire does not need to be expensive in Las Vegas.

Pool outfit, always. Almost every major resort has a pool or pool complex. A swimsuit, a thin cover-up or T-shirt, and flip-flops take minimal bag space and are essential. A microfibre travel towel saves you from renting resort towels, though most properties provide them.

Comfortable walking shoes — the Strip is longer than it looks. Four-plus miles of walking on hard pavement, in dry heat, across multiple days adds up fast. Pack your most broken-in, supportive footwear. Blisters on day two of a Vegas trip are a genuine problem. One pair of supportive shoes that also passes for smart-casual (clean leather trainers, quality loafers) covers the Strip walking and most restaurant dress codes without needing a second pair.

Light layers for desert nights. Las Vegas sits in the Mojave Desert at roughly 2,000 feet elevation. Summer days can reach over 40°C (105°F), but once the sun sets the temperature drops quickly. Even in July, late-night outdoor time on the Strip can feel cool. Carry a thin packable jacket or a light cardigan — it takes almost no space and saves you from buying a casino gift-shop sweatshirt at 2 am.

Hydration and desert sun. Pack an empty reusable water bottle and fill it after security. The dry desert air accelerates dehydration considerably, especially combined with air conditioning and alcohol. Sunscreen is essential if you will be at a pool or walking the Strip in daylight — pack a 100 ml bottle within TSA liquid rules, or buy a large bottle in Las Vegas where it is inexpensive.

What to Buy in Vegas vs What to Bring

Sunscreen in large sizes, Las Vegas-themed souvenirs, and alcohol purchased at stores or casinos are all better bought there than hauled from home. The Strip has multiple large CVS and Walgreens locations with full travel supplies. Leave room in your bag for the return journey — Las Vegas is an easy city to buy things in.

Getting Around with a Carry-On

LAS is bag-drop-friendly, rideshares are abundant, and casino resorts all have luggage storage at the bell desk if you check out before your flight. A standard 22-inch carry-on and a personal item are all you will need for nearly any Vegas trip.

Frequently asked questions

Does Southwest Airlines charge for carry-on bags to Las Vegas?

No. Southwest's bags fly free policy covers two free checked bags and includes a full-size carry-on plus a personal item on every fare. There are no weight limits for carry-on bags on Southwest. This makes Southwest one of the best-value options for Las Vegas travel if you want flexibility in what you bring.

Do Spirit, Frontier, and Allegiant charge for carry-on bags at LAS?

Yes. All three ultra-low-cost carriers charge separately for carry-on bags that go in the overhead bin. A personal item that fits under the seat is free on all three. If you want to travel carry-on only on Spirit, Frontier, or Allegiant, you must pay the carry-on fee at booking — it is always cheaper booked in advance than at the gate.

How long does security take at Harry Reid International Airport?

LAS is consistently one of the more efficient large US airports for security. Standard security queues for domestic flights typically clear in 15 to 25 minutes during normal travel periods. TSA PreCheck lanes move even faster. The airport's straightforward layout, with two main terminals, makes it easy to navigate. Allow the standard 90 minutes for domestic flights and 2.5 hours for international.

Can I bring alcohol I buy in Vegas back in my carry-on?

Not easily. Bottles purchased from liquor stores or casino shops are standard glass bottles that exceed the 100 ml TSA liquid rule and cannot go in carry-on bags. Souvenir spirits, wine, and whiskey purchased in Las Vegas must be checked, packed in a hard case with padding, or shipped home. A few miniature 50 ml bottles technically comply with liquid rules if placed in your quart bag, but full-size purchases require a checked bag or mail.

What is the walking distance on the Las Vegas Strip?

The Las Vegas Strip runs approximately 4.4 miles from Mandalay Bay at the south end to the Stratosphere at the north. Walking the full length is possible but takes over 90 minutes at a normal pace in the heat. The Las Vegas Monorail runs along the east side of the Strip and connects several major resorts. The Deuce bus also runs the length of the Strip. Most visitors walk sections of the Strip and use taxis or rideshare for longer distances.
