Korean Air Checked Baggage: Allowances, Fees & SKYPASS Perks
Korean Air piece vs weight system by route, Prestige and First allowances, Morning Calm status benefits, and Seoul Incheon city check-in tips.
Korean Air Checked Baggage Rules
Korean Air is South Korea's flag carrier and one of Asia's premier long-haul airlines, operating an extensive network from its Seoul Incheon International Airport hub to destinations across the Americas, Europe, Oceania, and throughout Asia. A critical nuance for Korean Air passengers is that the airline applies two different baggage systems depending on the route: a piece-based system on long-haul routes and a weight-based system on most Asian routes. Getting this wrong at the airport is one of the most common sources of unexpected fees on Korean Air.
Understanding the Two Systems
Piece system routes:
- Flights between Korea and the Americas (USA, Canada, Mexico, Brazil)
- Flights between Korea and Europe (most countries)
- Flights between Korea and Oceania (Australia, New Zealand)
- Flights between Korea and Africa
Weight system routes:
- Flights within Asia (Japan, China, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Central Asia)
- Flights to the Middle East
- Flights on domestic Korean Air routes (rare, as domestic Korea is dominated by Korean low-cost carriers)
The weight system gives you a total weight pool to distribute across bags. The piece system gives you a fixed number of bags each with an individual weight cap.
Economy Class Allowances
Piece System Routes (Transatlantic and Americas)
Economy Class passengers on piece-system routes receive:
- 2 bags, each up to 23 kg
- Each bag must not exceed 158 cm in total linear dimensions
This is a generous allowance relative to some competitors on transatlantic routes, where a single bag in Economy is becoming more common among legacy carriers.
Weight System Routes (Asian Routes)
Economy Class passengers on weight-system routes receive:
- 23 kg total for most Economy fares
- 32 kg total on some higher fare buckets (check your fare conditions)
The weight is the total across all bags combined. Individual bags must not exceed 32 kg each. The 23 kg total on Asian routes is notably lower than the 46 kg (2 × 23 kg) available on transatlantic piece routes, so passengers who regularly fly Korean Air across both regions should track which system applies to each booking.
Prestige Class (Business Class) Allowances
Piece System Routes
Prestige Class (Korean Air's Business Class branding) passengers on piece-system routes:
- 2 bags, each up to 32 kg
- Maximum 158 cm linear dimensions per bag
Weight System Routes
Prestige Class passengers on weight-system routes:
- 40 kg total
First Class Allowances
Piece System Routes
First Class passengers:
- 3 bags, each up to 32 kg
Weight System Routes
First Class passengers:
- 60 kg total
SKYPASS Frequent Flyer Benefits
Korean Air's frequent flyer programme is called SKYPASS, and status tiers carry meaningful extra baggage benefits. SKYPASS elite tiers are: Morning Calm, Morning Calm Premium, Million Miler, and Prestige Club (at the highest levels). The two most practically relevant for most travellers are Morning Calm and Morning Calm Premium.
Morning Calm (entry elite tier)
- +1 bag (23 kg) on piece-system routes in Economy
- +10 kg on weight-system routes in Economy
- Priority baggage handling (bags tagged for early carousel delivery)
- This tier is earned with 30,000 Elite Qualifying Miles or 40 Elite Qualifying Segments per calendar year
Morning Calm Premium
- +1 bag (32 kg) on piece-system routes in Economy — effectively matching a Business Class allowance
- +20 kg on weight-system routes in Economy
- Dedicated check-in counter with baggage staff assistance
- This tier requires 50,000 Elite Qualifying Miles or 60 Elite Qualifying Segments per calendar year
Prestige Club / Million Miler
- Lifetime recognition for frequent Korean Air travellers
- +1 bag (32 kg) on piece-system routes
- +20 kg on weight-system routes
- Benefits persist regardless of annual flying activity once the lifetime threshold is met
SkyTeam Elite and Elite Plus Recognition
Korean Air is a founding member of the SkyTeam alliance and recognises SkyTeam Elite and Elite Plus cardholders on Korean Air-operated flights.
SkyTeam Elite Plus (highest alliance tier — equivalent to Korean Air Morning Calm Premium):
- +1 bag (32 kg) on piece-system routes for Economy passengers
- +20 kg on weight-system routes
- Priority baggage delivery
- Covers Delta SkyMiles Diamond Medallion, Air France Flying Blue Platinum, KLM Platinum, and equivalent tiers across all SkyTeam members
SkyTeam Elite (mid alliance tier — equivalent to Korean Air Morning Calm):
- +1 bag (23 kg) on piece-system routes
- +10 kg on weight-system routes
- Covers Delta Gold Medallion, Air France Flying Blue Gold, and equivalent tiers
These recognition benefits apply only on Korean Air KE-operated flights, not on codeshare segments flown by other carriers on Korean Air ticket numbers.
Seoul Incheon Hub Tips
Incheon International Airport (ICN) is one of Asia's largest and most well-organised hubs. Korean Air's check-in counters are located in Terminal 2, which was built specifically for Korean Air and Delta Air Lines. Key tips:
- Check in at Terminal 2, not Terminal 1 (which handles most other international carriers). New arrivals sometimes go to the wrong terminal if they follow generic airport signage.
- Korean Air offers city check-in at Seoul Station in downtown Seoul. You can check bags and receive boarding passes there, then travel to the airport without carrying luggage. This service runs until approximately three hours before departure for most flights.
- Incheon's baggage claim is fast by international standards for Korean Air priority-tagged bags. Morning Calm and above members see noticeably quicker delivery.
- Transit bag check-through works smoothly on single-ticket itineraries via Incheon. If you are transiting through ICN between Korean Air domestic connector flights and international services, bags are typically checked through to the final destination.
Overweight and Excess Baggage Fees
Overweight fees — piece system routes (per bag):
- Bags weighing 23–32 kg: approximately USD 100 per bag per sector
- Bags weighing 32–45 kg: approximately USD 200 per bag per sector
- Bags over 45 kg: not accepted as checked baggage
Overweight fees — weight system routes:
- Excess weight beyond the total allowance: approximately USD 15 per kg
Oversized fees (all routes):
- Bags exceeding 158 cm in total linear dimensions: approximately USD 100 per sector
Excess piece fees — piece system routes:
- Third bag in Economy (beyond the included two): approximately USD 200 per sector
- Third bag in Prestige (beyond the included two): approximately USD 200 per sector
Fees are quoted in USD for international routes but may be charged in KRW for Korea-origin bookings. Korean Air updates fee schedules periodically; confirm current rates before travel.
Special Items and Sports Equipment
Musical instruments: Small instruments fitting within the piece/weight limits are accepted as checked baggage. Cellos and other oversized instruments require a purchased seat.
Golf equipment: Golf bags (clubs and bag) are accepted as one piece within the piece allowance if under 23 kg. If the golf bag alone exceeds 23 kg, overweight fees apply.
Ski and snowboard equipment: Treated as a standard bag if within size and weight limits. Oversized ski bags attract the standard oversized fee.
Bicycles: Must be packed in a bike box or protective bag with pedals removed and handlebars secured. Accepted as one piece within the piece allowance; overweight and oversize fees apply if limits are exceeded.
Strollers and car seats: One stroller and one car seat per infant are accepted free of charge in addition to the ticketed allowance.
Dry ice: Accepted in checked baggage up to 2.5 kg per passenger for packing perishable items, with a clearly labelled container.
Practical Tips for Korean Air Passengers
- Confirm your system before packing. Check Korean Air's baggage page with your specific route to confirm piece vs weight system. It is the single most impactful variable in your packing decision.
- Pre-purchase extra bags online. Korean Air allows additional baggage purchase through its website at significant savings over airport rates.
- City check-in at Seoul Station is genuinely useful for avoiding large suitcases on the AREX (Airport Rail Express) to ICN. The service is popular; arrive at Seoul Station early during peak travel periods.
- SkyTeam benefits require linking your card number. Add your elite status membership number to your Korean Air booking well in advance to ensure benefits are applied at check-in automatically.
- Asian route weight caps catch travellers by surprise. A traveller accustomed to 2 × 23 kg on transatlantic Korean Air flights may not realise they only have 23 kg total on a Seoul–Bangkok sector on the same trip. Check each flight segment independently.
