Choose a carry-on backpack for your ticket and your route through the airport and beyond. “Travel backpack” does not mean free carriage, guaranteed underseat fit or exemption from gate charges. Check the actual packed exterior and the allowance you booked.

Capacity in liters cannot establish whether a bag passes a sizer. Fabric flexibility cannot guarantee compression of a rigid frame or laptop. Measure with pockets filled; external bottles and attached pouches also affect the shape.
Personal item and overhead bag are different decisions
Compare every flight segment and the particular fare. An overhead-sized pack is not automatically a personal item. For example, 44 × 30 × 20 cm exceeds a 40 × 30 × 20 cm box by 4 cm; a marketing label does not remove that difference.
A school's or commuter's backpack can be suitable when its packed measurements and your ticket agree. You do not need a new brand if the bag you own already works. Conversely, hiding shoulder straps does not waive baggage fees.
Try the load before buying
Adjust the shoulder straps and any hip belt, then walk with a load similar to your trip. Check that you can reach essentials without emptying the bag. Comfort depends on the actual fit; gender, height or price alone cannot determine the best model.
