A 40-litre label does not establish cabin fit. Start with packed external dimensions and the fare's bag allowance, then decide whether the harness and organisation justify the empty weight.

Documented 40L candidate

The current Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel Pack lists 55×35×23 cm, 40 L and 1.48 kg. It has adjustable torso length, a stowable harness/hipbelt and a sleeve for most laptops up to 16 inches. The compatible daypack is sold separately; do not assume a detachable daypack is included in this 40L product.

Your requirementAssessment from published data
A 55×40×23 cm box allowanceWithin these nominal dimensions; measure packed bulges
Ryanair Priority, 55×40×20 cmPublished depth is 3 cm over the allowance
Ryanair free underseat, 40×30×20 cmToo large by published dimensions
7 kg packed limit5.52 kg remains after subtracting the published 1.48 kg bag weight

These are comparisons and arithmetic, not observed gate outcomes. Compression is not guaranteed to reduce the bag to a particular size; measure the actual packed result.

If your airline requires 20 cm depth

A different shape can matter more than the capacity number. The Cabin Max Metz 44L RPET is listed at 55×40×20 cm. It is a different capacity and construction, not another version of the Farpoint. Compare those tradeoffs and the exact airline allowance before choosing.

Use the route checker when more than one carrier is involved. We have not tested comfort under load or durability, so neither model is ranked as the best for hiking merely because it has backpack straps.

How this shortlist was made
