British Airways Checked Baggage: Fees, Limits & Allowances

British Airways checked baggage depends on the ticket, cabin and itinerary. A hand-baggage-only booking includes no checked bag; it still has cabin baggage. Check the baggage line in your reservation before buying or packing a suitcase.

Published standard allowances

These are the published BA categories, without assuming a loyalty bonus. The normal bag size is up to 90 × 75 × 43 cm. Compare all three sides; their arithmetic sum does not create an alternative linear allowance.

Weight and extra charges

For a bag whose allowance is 23 kg, weight above that allowance up to 32 kg can incur 65 GBP / 75 EUR / 100 USD / 100 CAD, per overweight bag and one-way journey. Do not wait until 24 kg to consider a bag overweight. A Business bag within its 32 kg allowance is different.

Ordinary checked bags may not exceed 32 kg. Do not assume that prior notice buys acceptance of a heavier ordinary suitcase. Confirm the separate process for specialist items with the airline.

Extra-piece prices depend on the booking. Use BA’s baggage calculator and FAQs to obtain the applicable quote. A fee for an extra bag and a fee for excess weight are different questions; do not compare one in place of the other.

Status and partner flights

British Airways Club status may change the allowance. Check the official calculator using the traveler’s actual membership and itinerary; Bronze does not automatically add a long-haul bag. Avoid extending a BA benefit to every partner flight or every fare.

The website where you paid does not, by itself, determine the baggage rules. For partner-operated or combined journeys, read the allowance on the ticket and confirm it for every segment. Keep a copy of the booking’s baggage details if the itinerary changes.

Comparing with Virgin Atlantic

Virgin Atlantic Economy Light has no included checked bag, while its cabin bag remains included. Upper Class publishes two checked bags up to 32 kg each. Compare your exact ticket rather than treating both airlines’ lowest fares as including a suitcase in the hold.

Before leaving home

Lay out each traveler’s booked allowance, then weigh each bag separately. Include covers, straps and anything added after your first measurement. Keep a little practical packing room for items you may move between bags, while respecting every bag’s limit and each traveler’s entitlement.
