Can You Bring a Razor on a Plane? (2026 Rules)

Disposable and cartridge razors are allowed in carry-on. Safety razor blades and straight razors are banned from carry-on. Electric razors are always allowed.

Can You Bring a Razor on a Plane?

It depends on the type. Disposable razors, cartridge razors, and electric razors are allowed in carry-on. Safety razor blades and straight razors are banned from carry-on but can travel in checked luggage.

Why the Rules Differ by Razor Type

The security concern is an exposed metal blade capable of causing injury. A disposable BIC razor has its blade permanently enclosed in plastic — it cannot be separated and used as a cutting instrument. A double-edge safety razor blade or a straight razor has a bare metal blade that can be removed from the handle, which is why they are prohibited in the cabin.

What Is Allowed in Carry-On

Disposable razors: allowed in carry-on worldwide. Both the razor and a spare are fine. The blade is fixed inside plastic and poses no security concern.

Cartridge razors (Gillette, Schick, etc.): the handle and fitted cartridge are allowed. The multi-blade cartridge is enclosed in plastic. Common examples: Gillette Mach3, Gillette Fusion, Schick Hydro, any replacement cartridge in its sealed packaging.

Electric razors: always allowed in carry-on. No exposed blade, no restriction.

Safety razor handle (without blades): the handle alone — the chrome or brass body of a safety razor without a blade loaded — is allowed in carry-on. Some travellers travel with the handle in carry-on and buy blades at their destination.

What Is Banned from Carry-On

Safety razor blades: double-edge (DE) blades are prohibited in carry-on luggage. This applies whether the blade is:

  • Installed in the safety razor
  • In the original manufacturer's packaging
  • Wrapped in paper or a blade bank

If you travel with a safety razor and carry it on, you must remove the blade before packing. Pack blades in checked luggage — they are allowed in checked bags.

Straight razors (cut-throat razors): entirely prohibited from carry-on. The full open blade is the reason for the ban. Pack in checked luggage, with the blade folded or wrapped securely.

Razor blades (loose): any loose blade — utility razor blades, replacement DE blades, scalpels — is prohibited from carry-on.

Practical Advice for Safety Razor Travellers

Safety razors are popular for travel because the handle is durable and blades are cheap to buy globally. The standard approach for carry-on-only travel:

  1. Bring the handle, buy blades at the destination. DE blades are available in pharmacies and supermarkets worldwide. A pack of 10 Feather or Astra blades costs under $3 in most countries.
  2. Pack blades in checked luggage if you are checking a bag. Wrap them in the original packaging or a travel blade holder.
  3. Remove the blade from the handle before going through security if you attempt to carry the razor on — though note the blade itself cannot go in carry-on regardless.

Shaving Cream and Soap

Shaving cream (aerosol or tube): subject to the 100 ml liquids rule. Most standard tubes and aerosol cans are 150–200 ml. Buy travel-size (under 100 ml) or switch to a shaving soap puck.

Solid shaving soap: not subject to the liquids rule. A soap puck can be any size in carry-on. A travel tin of solid shaving soap is the easiest solution for carry-on-only shaving.

Aftershave (liquid): 100 ml or under in your liquids bag.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring a disposable razor in my carry-on?

Yes. Disposable plastic razors (where the blade is permanently enclosed in plastic) are allowed in carry-on luggage worldwide. This includes BIC, Gillette Sensor 2, and similar single-use disposables.

Can I bring a safety razor in my carry-on?

The safety razor handle is allowed in carry-on, but the blades are not. Double-edge safety razor blades are prohibited from carry-on in the US, UK, EU, and Australia regardless of whether they are installed in the razor or in packaging. Pack blades in checked luggage.

Are straight razors allowed on planes?

No. Straight razors (cut-throat razors) are prohibited from carry-on luggage worldwide. The exposed full-length blade is the reason. Straight razors must be packed in checked luggage.

Can I bring shaving cream in my carry-on?

Yes, if it is 100 ml or under. Standard shaving cream tubes and cans are usually 150–200 ml and too large for carry-on. Use a travel-size tube or switch to solid shaving soap, which is not subject to the liquids rule.

Is an electric razor always allowed in carry-on?

Yes. Electric razors have no exposed blade and are allowed in carry-on bags on all airlines. They do not need to be removed at the security checkpoint.
