Can You Bring Deodorant on a Plane? Solid vs. Spray

Solid stick deodorant has no restrictions in carry-on. Roll-on, aerosol, and gel deodorant must be 100ml or under and go in your liquids bag.

Can You Bring Deodorant on a Plane?

Yes — but the rules depend on the format. Solid stick deodorant can be any size and has no restrictions in carry-on. Roll-on, aerosol spray, and gel deodorant are treated as liquids and must be 100ml or under per container, fitting in your clear quart-sized liquids bag. In checked luggage, all formats are allowed in larger sizes.

Solid Stick Deodorant: No Restrictions

Solid stick deodorant — the standard twist-up or push-up stick format — is classified as a solid by airport security. It is not subject to the liquids rule.

This means:

  • Any size stick is allowed in carry-on (50g, 75g, 100g, or larger)
  • It does not need to go in your clear liquids bag
  • There is no quantity limit

This applies to standard antiperspirant sticks, clinical-strength sticks, and natural deodorant sticks. If it is solid all the way through and applies like a stick, it is a solid for security purposes.

Roll-On Deodorant: 100ml Rule Applies

Roll-on deodorant contains liquid, so it is treated as a liquid in carry-on:

  • Maximum 100ml (3.4 oz) per container
  • Must be placed in your clear resealable liquids bag for screening
  • Any roll-on container larger than 100ml must go in checked luggage

Travel-size roll-ons in 50ml and 75ml sizes are widely available and designed specifically for this rule. Many brands sell travel multipacks. If you prefer roll-on, a travel-size version is the straightforward solution for carry-on.

Aerosol Deodorant Spray: 100ml Rule Applies

Aerosol deodorant sprays are classified as aerosols, which follow the same rule as liquids in carry-on:

  • Maximum 100ml (3.4 oz) per container
  • Must fit in your clear liquids bag
  • The 100ml limit refers to the container capacity, not how full it is

In checked luggage, aerosol deodorants can be larger. EU rules for aerosols in checked bags limit containers to 500ml each and a total of 2 litres of aerosol products per passenger across all containers. Most countries have similar limits. A standard 150ml or 250ml aerosol deodorant is fine in a checked bag.

Gel Deodorant: 100ml Rule Applies

Gel deodorants (which apply as a clear or semi-clear gel rather than a solid) are classified as gels and subject to the 100ml carry-on rule. Same treatment as roll-on and spray.

Crystal and Alum Deodorant Stones

Crystal deodorant (also sold as mineral salt deodorant or alum blocks) is a solid mineral that you wet and apply. Because it is a solid, it has no liquid restrictions in carry-on — any size is allowed and it does not go in the liquids bag.

Crystal deodorant is one of the most travel-friendly formats available. It is also long-lasting: a single alum block can last a year or more with daily use.

Aerosol in Checked Bags

Standard-size aerosol deodorants (150ml to 250ml cans) travel comfortably in checked luggage. The relevant limits:

  • No container larger than 500ml
  • Total aerosol volume across all items: 2 litres maximum per passenger (EU rule; other countries have similar limits)
  • Remove caps and store securely to prevent accidental discharge

In practice, two or three standard deodorant spray cans are well within these limits.

Which Format to Choose for Travel

If you want the simplest experience, solid stick wins:

For carry-on-only travel: Solid stick or crystal deodorant removes the complication entirely. You never have to worry about liquids bag space.

For short trips with a checked bag: Bring any format you prefer. Your standard-size roll-on or aerosol goes in checked luggage.

For long trips buying at destination: Many travelers buy deodorant when they arrive, especially for longer trips where weight matters. A standard deodorant stick is available in almost every destination worldwide.

Tips for Traveling with Deodorant

  • Travel-size roll-ons and gels (50ml) are inexpensive and widely available at pharmacies and airport shops
  • If you prefer aerosol, purchase a travel-size can under 100ml before your trip
  • Solid stick deodorant can be purchased in any size without worrying about security rules
  • Crystal deodorant stones are particularly practical for long trips as they are compact, solid, and last a very long time

Frequently asked questions

Does deodorant count as a liquid at airport security?

Solid stick deodorant does not count as a liquid. Roll-on, aerosol spray, and gel deodorants are liquids or aerosols and are subject to the 100ml carry-on rule, requiring them to fit in your clear liquids bag.

What's the easiest deodorant to travel with?

Solid stick deodorant is the easiest. It has no liquid restrictions, does not count toward your liquids bag allowance, and can be any size in carry-on. Crystal deodorant stones are equally restriction-free.
