Carry-On Packing for Corfu: Greece's Venetian Island
Corfu carry-on guide: CFU airport next to the Old Town, Ryanair and Jet2 rules, Mediterranean beach packing, and Venetian heritage sites.
Carry-On Packing for Corfu: Greece's Venetian Island
Corfu is the greenest, most historically layered of the Greek islands, shaped by 400 years of Venetian rule, a brief French interlude, and 50 years as a British protectorate before becoming part of Greece in 1864. The result is an island that feels distinctly unlike the rest of Greece: Baroque churches, French-influenced arcades, cricket on the esplanade, and dense olive groves instead of the whitewashed minimalism of the Cyclades. For carry-on travelers, it is close to ideal — a summer-weight island with budget airline direct flights from across Europe and a compact, walkable historic centre.
Ioannis Kapodistrias International Airport (CFU)
Corfu's airport has one of the most dramatic approaches in Europe. The runway sits on a narrow peninsula immediately north of Corfu Old Town, meaning aircraft on final approach pass directly over the Venetian fortresses at low altitude — a landmark that has made CFU famous among aviation enthusiasts and alarming to first-time visitors. The terminal is small and seasonal, expanding significantly in summer with charter flights supplementing scheduled services.
Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2, TUI, and British Airways all serve Corfu from the UK. Olympic Air and Sky Express connect it to Athens domestically. Charter carriers operated by TUI and other package holiday companies are major players on the route in summer, meaning the airport can be extremely busy from May through September.
Carry-on rules at CFU are the same as for any Ryanair or Jet2 route — the airport does not have special rules, but the airlines enforce their own policies consistently. Ryanair's standard fare allows a small personal item (40 × 20 × 25 cm) only in the cabin; a larger cabin bag (55 × 40 × 20 cm) requires priority boarding or an eligible fare tier. Jet2 typically allows one cabin bag (56 × 45 × 25 cm) plus a small personal bag on most fares, which is more generous. Always verify your specific fare before arriving at the gate, as policies and sizes vary between booking channels and fare classes.
Given that Corfu is primarily a summer beach and sightseeing destination, packing into a small cabin bag is very achievable — summer clothing is lightweight and compact.
Corfu's Unique History and Character
Corfu Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and genuinely one of the most interesting historic centres in Greece. The Venetian influence is everywhere: the narrow streets (kantounia) are reminiscent of Venetian lanes; the Old Fortress and New Fortress were built by Venetian engineers; the Church of Saint Spyridon, patron saint of Corfu, holds a silver reliquary with the saint's mummified remains that draws pilgrims year-round.
The Liston — a colonnaded esplanade modeled on the Rue de Rivoli in Paris, built during the brief French occupation — runs along the western edge of the Spianada, the broad green that serves as Corfu's central public space. Cricket is still played on the Spianada, a legacy of British rule that has been maintained as a genuine local sport and not a tourist curiosity.
The Achilleion Palace, 10 km south of Corfu Town, was built in 1889 for Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sisi) and later owned by Kaiser Wilhelm II; the gardens and interior are now open as a museum and are worth the short taxi ride from the Old Town. Paleokastritsa, on the northwest coast, is the island's most famously beautiful beach — a series of small coves backed by monastery-topped hills; it is best visited in spring or late afternoon in summer when coach tour groups have thinned out.
Summer Packing: Beach and Old Town
Corfu's summer season runs from May through October, peaking in July and August when temperatures regularly reach 28–32°C. The island is green and humid compared to drier Aegean islands — the sea breeze is generally pleasant but the heat is real.
Swimwear, sarong, and beach towel: The fundamental summer pack for any Greek island trip. Paleokastritsa and the beaches on the northeast coast are beautiful; a microfibre towel folds to almost nothing and dries in minutes.
SPF 50 sunscreen: Apply before leaving accommodation, particularly on beach days. The Mediterranean UV index in summer is consistently high — typically 8 to 10 from June through August. Carry a small bottle (within the 100 ml carry-on limit) for reapplication.
Light summer clothing: Cotton or linen shirts, cotton shorts or trousers, a sundress — these handle daytime in both the Old Town and at the beach. Colours fade in strong UV more quickly than at home but the pack weight is almost nothing.
Flat or comfortable walking shoes: The Old Town's kantounia are narrow stone-paved lanes, some with steps. The fortresses involve cobbled ramps and uneven ground. Sandals with proper support work well for a mix of beach and sightseeing; dedicated walking shoes are better for a full day at the fortresses.
One modest outfit for Old Town churches: The Church of Saint Spyridon and other churches in the Old Town require covered shoulders and knees. A light linen shirt worn open over a t-shirt, or a light scarf, handles this. The same item doubles as a layer for the evening breeze on restaurant terraces.
Layers for evening: Even in summer, Corfu's evenings are pleasant rather than oppressively hot. A light cardigan or thin long-sleeve top is useful for outdoor dinners on terraces where the breeze picks up after sunset.
Spring and Autumn: The Better Season for Sightseeing
May, June, and September offer arguably the best conditions for a Corfu visit. Temperatures are warm (20–27°C) without the peak July-August heat and humidity, beaches are less crowded, prices are lower, and the island's lush greenery is at its most vivid in spring after the winter rains. Pack slightly more layers — a light jacket for evenings, long trousers for cooler days — but the same summer essentials apply.
What to Skip
Heavy clothing of any kind in summer is unnecessary. A jacket is not needed in July and August except on air-conditioned transport. Skip multiple pairs of shoes — one pair of sandals with ankle support and one pair of walking shoes covers everything Corfu offers. Skip inflatable beach accessories that cannot be deflated and repacked into a carry-on; hire them at the beach instead.
Bag Size Recommendation
Summer Corfu packing is among the friendliest contexts for a small cabin bag. Beach clothes and light summer wear compress into very little volume; three or four days can fit into a 25-litre daypack if you are ruthless. For a week, a 35-40 litre bag handles everything comfortably within the 56 × 45 × 25 cm maximum allowed by Jet2 and the larger easyJet allowance. If you are on a standard Ryanair fare and relying on the free small bag, pack to the 40 × 20 × 25 cm limit and keep supplementary items in a personal item under the seat.
Three Corfu-Specific Tips
The Venetian Old Fortress is less visited than it should be — most tourists photograph it from the Liston but do not cross the moat and explore inside. Entry is inexpensive and the views from the highest lighthouse tower over the Old Town and Grand Harbour are among the finest on the island.
Paxos, the small island immediately south of Corfu, is reachable by high-speed ferry in around 45 minutes and is worth a full day: smaller, quieter, with some of the clearest water in the Ionian Sea and a handful of excellent tavernas. Day-trip boats depart from Corfu Town harbour in the morning and return in the late afternoon.
Olive oil from Corfu is exceptionally good — the island has over four million olive trees and a centuries-old tradition of cold-pressed oil production. Small bottles (within carry-on limits) make the most practical and authentic souvenir from the island; larger quantities need to go in checked luggage.
Frequently asked questions
How close is Corfu Airport to the Old Town?▾
Ioannis Kapodistrias International Airport (CFU) sits immediately adjacent to Corfu Old Town — the runway runs along the northern edge of the peninsula, and aircraft on approach pass directly over the Venetian fortresses; the airport terminal is around 2 km from the Old Town centre, a short taxi or bus ride away.
Do budget airlines like Ryanair and Jet2 strictly enforce carry-on rules at Corfu?▾
Yes — both Ryanair and Jet2 enforce carry-on policies consistently across all routes including Corfu; Ryanair requires priority boarding or an eligible fare to bring a larger cabin bag into the cabin, while Jet2 allows one cabin bag (56 × 45 × 25 cm) plus a small personal bag on most fares; check your specific fare before travel.
Is Corfu greener than other Greek islands?▾
Yes — Corfu receives significantly more rainfall than the eastern Aegean islands, particularly in winter and spring, which gives it a lush, forested landscape of olive groves, cypresses, and wildflowers that is quite different from the drier, rockier scenery of Santorini, Mykonos, or Rhodes; this rainfall also makes the island noticeably more verdant and cooler even in summer.
Why is cricket played in Corfu?▾
Cricket in Corfu is a direct legacy of British colonial rule from 1815 to 1864; the British garrison introduced the game, which the Corfiots adopted enthusiastically and have maintained ever since; matches are still played on the Spianada — the large green in front of the Old Town — making it the only place in Greece where cricket is a regular fixture.
