Gran Canaria Airport (LPA): What to Know

LPA is a large international airport with two main terminals. Most charter and UK budget flights use Terminal 1. Key practical details:

• Hire car collection: Major rental companies have desks in arrivals. The hire car lot requires a short shuttle bus ride from the terminal at most operators.
• Bus to Las Palmas: Global route 66 runs from LPA bus stop (outside arrivals) to Las Palmas city centre. Journey is around 30 minutes, fare is inexpensive. Runs frequently from early morning.
• Security: Standard EU 100 ml liquids rules. LPA handles high summer volumes — allow 2 hours before departure during peak season.
• Transfers to resorts: Organised coaches from holiday operators drop passengers at resort hotels directly. Independent travellers can take a taxi or hire car.

Packing for Gran Canaria

Beach gear, not resort gear. Maspalomas is famous for its protected UNESCO dune system and a long sandy beach. Lightweight beach essentials — swimwear, beach towel, sarong — pack flat and light. Most accommodation provides pool towels. You do not need to bring a full beach towel if your hotel does.

One smart outfit for Las Palmas. If you are spending time in Las Palmas city, one smart casual outfit covers evenings in the restaurant-heavy Triana neighbourhood and the tapas bars in Vegueta. Las Palmas has a relaxed dress code — smart trainers and a clean shirt are appropriate almost everywhere.

Carnival packing (February trips). Las Palmas Carnival is one of the largest in the world, running for several weeks in February with themed nights and a famous drag queen election (Drag Gala). If you want to participate in themed evenings, pack lightweight bright clothing or sequined accessories — these pack flat and are light. Fancy dress outfits for the big parades can be hired locally if you do not want to carry costume pieces.

Maspalomas Pride (early May). Maspalomas hosts one of Europe's largest LGBTQ+ Pride events in early May. The event is outdoor, beach-adjacent, and requires only lightweight clothing. The beach packing list applies.

Reef-safe sunscreen. Gran Canaria's marine protected areas around Maspalomas benefit from reef-safe mineral sunscreen. Buy before travel and decant into 100 ml travel containers.

Ferry-ready bag. If you plan to take the Fred Olsen or Naviera Armas ferry to Tenerife (90-minute crossing from Las Palmas, or 35 minutes from Agaete), a carry-on bag is easy to handle on foot passenger ferries. No special packing adjustment is needed.

Airport Tips

• Saturday peak: Like all Canary Islands airports, LPA's peak changeover is Saturday. Queues for security and hire car return are longest between 10:00 and 15:00.
• Departures shops: LPA has reasonable airside shops and cafes but prices are airport-level. Buy any last-minute items in Las Palmas or Maspalomas before departure.
• Return flight timing: Late afternoon and evening flights back to the UK are common. Use your last half-day in Gran Canaria rather than arriving at the airport too early.
