Carry-On Only for Mexico: Volaris, Aeromexico, and Beach Packing
Pack carry-on only for Mexico. Know Volaris and VivaAerobus fees, Aeromexico's free allowance, and what to skip buying until you land in Cancun.
Carry-On Only for Mexico: Volaris, Aeromexico, and Beach Packing
Mexico is one of the best carry-on-only destinations on the planet. Beachwear compresses to almost nothing, toiletries are cheap and abundant at destination, and travelling with only a cabin bag means no checked-bag fees on Mexico's budget airlines — which can otherwise add significant cost to a trip. The key is knowing exactly what each airline includes before you book.
The Mexican Airline Fee Landscape
Mexico's domestic and international aviation market includes several carriers with very different policies.
Volaris is one of Mexico's largest budget airlines and operates extensively both domestically and to the US. Their base fares include only a small under-seat personal item — not a full cabin bag. Adding a carry-on at booking typically costs $12–25 USD depending on route and timing. Adding it at the airport costs substantially more. If you're flying Volaris, factor the carry-on fee into your comparison with other airlines.
VivaAerobus follows the same model. Base fares include a personal item only, with carry-on access sold separately. Both Volaris and VivaAerobus have copied the ultra-low-cost carrier model from European budget airlines: the headline fare is low, and optional extras add up quickly.
Aeromexico is Mexico's full-service flag carrier and includes one carry-on bag on most standard fares. The allowed dimensions are 22 × 14 × 9 inches with a 10 kg limit. Note that Aeromexico's lowest "Basic" fare tier may have different allowances — always check your specific booking confirmation.
Interjet ceased operations in 2021 and no longer flies.
Beach Packing: What to Bring, What to Buy
Packing for Cancun, Tulum, or Puerto Vallarta is naturally light because the climate does the work for you.
Bring from home:
- 3–4 lightweight swimsuits or boardshorts (these compress almost flat)
- 5–6 pairs of lightweight underwear
- 3–4 quick-dry t-shirts or linen shirts
- 1 pair of shorts and 1 lightweight pair of trousers (for restaurants and cooler evenings)
- 1 packable rain layer (afternoon thunderstorms are common May–October)
- Flip flops and one pair of walking sandals — that is enough footwear
- Any prescription medication (always in the cabin bag)
Buy in Mexico instead of packing:
- Sunscreen — available everywhere in Mexico at very reasonable prices. The large 200 ml bottle that violates liquid rules costs less than at home, so buy on arrival.
- Insect repellent — DEET-based repellents are cheap at Mexican pharmacies (Farmacias del Ahorro, Farmacia Guadalajara, Chedraui supermarkets)
- Body wash, shampoo, conditioner — hotels often provide these; supermarkets stock them at low cost
- Beach towels — many hotels include them; if not, lightweight beach towels at Walmart Mexico cost very little
Cenote swimming gear — mask, snorkel, and water shoes — fits easily in a carry-on. A cheap travel snorkel set compresses well, or rent at the cenote for around $5.
Mezcal and Alcohol: The Carry-On Trap
Mezcal and tequila are Mexico's most tempting souvenirs. The liquid rules are unambiguous: bottles over 100 ml cannot go through security in your carry-on. If you want to bring a full bottle home, you have two options:
- Check a bag (or purchase a checked bag allowance for the return)
- Buy from a duty-free shop inside the departure terminal after security — these purchases are permitted in most cases, though some countries restrict alcohol volumes on arrival
A small 50–100 ml bottle of mezcal fits in your liquids bag legally. Speciality mezcal brands sell miniature bottles specifically for travel.
Airport Security at Cancun and CDMX
Cancun (CUN) is one of Mexico's busiest international airports and security can be slow during peak periods. Allow 3 hours before international departure without exception during high season (December–April, July–August). The airport expanded significantly in recent years and Terminal 3 is the primary international hub.
Mexico City (MEX) — Benito Juárez International Airport is one of Latin America's busiest airports. It is large, sometimes chaotic, and security queues during morning rush hours can be long. Arrive early. The newer Felipe Ángeles International Airport (NLU), about 45 km north of the city centre, handles overflow traffic and is generally less busy.
Connecting Domestically Inside Mexico
If you fly internationally to Mexico City or Guadalajara and then connect domestically to a resort destination on Volaris or VivaAerobus, remember that your international carrier's generous cabin allowance does not transfer. The domestic carrier's rules apply to that leg. Pay the carry-on fee online before you arrive — the airport rate is always higher.
Travelling carry-on only in Mexico is genuinely easy once you know the airline fee structures. Pick the right carrier, buy sunscreen locally, and keep the mezcal in checked luggage — or save it for the airport duty-free.
Frequently asked questions
Does Volaris include a free carry-on bag?▾
No. Volaris does not include a free carry-on bag on base fares. You pay extra for cabin bag access above a small personal item. Check your fare class carefully at booking and add the bag fee before you arrive at the airport, where it costs more.
What is Aeromexico's carry-on size limit?▾
Aeromexico allows one carry-on bag on standard fares with maximum dimensions of 22 × 14 × 9 inches (55 × 35 × 22 cm) and a weight limit of 10 kg. Base economy fares (Basic) may have different allowances — check your specific ticket.
Does VivaAerobus include a free carry-on?▾
No. VivaAerobus charges separately for cabin bags above a small under-seat item. Like Volaris, add the carry-on fee at booking rather than at the airport — the online rate is lower.
How early should I arrive at Cancun airport for an international flight?▾
Arrive at least 3 hours before international departure from Cancun (CUN). The airport is busy, security and immigration can be slow during peak periods, and departures tax formalities add time. Two hours is manageable for domestic flights.
Can I bring mezcal or tequila from Mexico in my carry-on?▾
No. Bottles over 100 ml are not permitted in carry-on bags under standard liquid rules — tequila and mezcal must go in checked luggage if you want to bring a standard bottle home. Duty-free purchases made after security at the departure airport are permitted.
