VivaAerobus: Zero, Switch and Smart

Viva includes one 45×35×20 cm personal item in every bundle. Zero excludes the main bag. Switch offers one 55×40×25 cm main bag up to 10 kg OR one 15 kg checked bag; Smart includes one 15 kg main bag plus one 25 kg checked bag. Main measurements include wheels and handles. Light has been renamed Switch. Confirm the selected option and price; choosing the Switch checked bag does not also include its main cabin bag.

Aeromexico: The Comfortable Option

Aeromexico permits one main bag up to 55×40×25 cm plus one underseat personal item when included or purchased. Their combined limit is 10 kg for Basic families, or 10/15 kg for Classic/Flex families by region; the United States row is 10 kg for all. Aeromexico Básica includes the main bag within 10 kg combined; Light is a different fare and requires a main-bag purchase where offered. The fare name and whole route matter.

What to Pack for Guadalajara

Guadalajara sits at 1,566 m altitude, which moderates the heat. Days are warm but not tropical hot; evenings can be cool. Summer (June–September) brings afternoon rainstorms — brief but heavy.

Packing list for 4–6 days carry-on only:

• Clothing: Light breathable shirts, one or two pairs of trousers, a mid-layer for evenings (a thin fleece or light jacket)
• Rain layer: A packable rain jacket takes 10 minutes to justify its entire presence during Jalisco's afternoon downpours

Getting there:

• Tequila Express train: Departs from Guadalajara on weekends, includes live mariachi music, a distillery visit, and food. Book at least a week in advance.
• Bus: Regular bus service from Guadalajara's Antigua Central Camionera takes 1.5–2 hours and costs under 100 MXN.

Check ordinary liquid-container limits, alcohol strength and quantity restrictions, baggage entitlement, transfer screening and destination customs separately. Tlaquepaque: Fragile Souvenirs

The suburb of Tlaquepaque is Guadalajara's artisan district: ceramics, blown glass, leather, and textiles. The quality is genuine and the prices are fair. The problem for carry-on travellers is weight and fragility.

Practical advice:

• Small talavera tiles are flat, light, and pack well between clothing layers.
• Blown glass is beautiful but very fragile and awkward to pack safely in a carry-on.
• For larger ceramic or glass pieces, consider having the shop ship them directly, or dedicate space in a checked bag.
• Textiles (woven tablecloths, embroidered items) are lightweight and compress well.

GDL Airport Tips

Miguel Hidalgo International Airport is 16 km from the city centre and 8 km from Zapopan. Terminal 1 handles most domestic and US flights; Terminal 2 handles additional capacity.

• Transport: Use official airport taxis from the fixed-price booth inside arrivals, or app-based rides (Uber, DiDi) from the designated pickup area outside. Agree the price before entering an unmarked taxi.
• Check airport purchases before buying. Confirm baggage count, liquid screening, transfer and customs conditions; airside purchase alone is not permission.
• Security: US-bound flights from GDL go through TSA-equivalent screening plus additional Mexican airport security. Allow extra time.

Lucha Libre and Mariachi

Two authentically Guadalajaran experiences worth planning around:

• Lucha libre: Matches are held at the Arena Coliseo Guadalajara on Wednesdays and Fridays. Entry is inexpensive. No special gear needed — just wear comfortable clothes.
• Mariachi: The Plaza de los Mariachis near the Mercado Libertad (San Juan de Dios market) is where you find the real thing in the evenings. Musicians gather and play; request a song for a small tip.

Practical Tips

• Weigh and measure before departure. For Volaris, check 10 kg for the main bag and 20 kg for both pieces together; verify other carriers separately.
• Rain jacket on Guadalajara trips. June through September afternoon rains are not optional. A packable jacket weighs under 200 g and packs flat.
