Carry-On Packing Guide for an Osaka Trip

Pack smart for Osaka with JAL, ANA, and Peach Aviation carry-on rules, airport transport tips, and konbini culture shortcuts.

Carry-On Packing Guide for an Osaka Trip

Osaka is Japan's second city in attitude and its first city in food. Louder than Tokyo, friendlier than you expect, and with a street-food culture that makes packing snacks completely pointless, it rewards travellers who arrive light and leave room for discovery. This guide covers the carry-on rules for the airlines that fly there, how to navigate both airports, and the Osaka-specific packing decisions worth making before you zip up.

Airline Carry-On Quick Reference

ANA (economy)55 × 40 × 25 cm10 kgDomestic ITM–KIX routes

Peach Aviation is the outlier. Its 7 kg cabin allowance and narrow 23 cm depth limit catch travellers off guard. If you are flying Peach for a domestic leg (for example, Osaka to Sapporo), bring the absolute minimum in the cabin.

The Two Osaka Airports

Kansai International Airport (KIX) sits on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, about 75 minutes from central Osaka by rail. It handles all international arrivals and most LCC domestic routes. Terminal 1 serves JAL, ANA, and major international carriers. Terminal 2 (a separate building reached by shuttle bus) is Peach Aviation's base.

Itami Airport (ITM) is the domestic-only airport 30 minutes north of central Osaka. JAL and ANA operate frequent shuttle services between ITM and Tokyo Haneda (HND) every 30–40 minutes throughout the day. The flight takes 50 minutes and uses a 10 kg carry-on allowance. Itami is closer to the city and far less stressful than KIX for short hops.

Getting from KIX to Osaka and Kyoto

  • Haruka Express: KIX to Tennoji (Osaka) in 45 min, Shin-Osaka in 55 min, Kyoto in 75 min. IC card or reserved seat.
  • Nankai Rapid: KIX to Namba in 40 min. Cheapest option for central Osaka.
  • Limousine bus: Direct to major hotels. No transfers but slower in traffic.

What to Pack

Essentials

  • Clothes for 4–7 days depending on trip length. Japan has laundromats in most neighbourhoods and coin laundry at many guesthouses — plan one laundry day to extend any trip.
  • Layers for summer (June–September). Heat and humidity in Osaka in July and August are intense. Lightweight moisture-wicking fabrics and a compact foldable umbrella are worth the space.
  • One smart-casual outfit. Osaka is informal but some restaurants and rooftop bars have a relaxed dress code.
  • Comfortable walking shoes. Dotonbori, Shinsekai, and Osaka Castle Park all involve significant walking on hard pavement.

Skip These — Konbini Has Them

Japan's convenience stores (7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Lawson) are open 24 hours and sell almost everything a traveller needs:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Razor and shaving foam
  • Face wash and moisturiser
  • Painkillers and basic medicine
  • Phone chargers and travel adapters
  • Umbrellas

If bag space is tight, leaving these at home is the single best packing move for any Japan trip.

Shopping Allowance

Osaka's Shinsaibashi and Amerika-mura shopping districts offer Japanese fashion, streetwear, and vintage clothing at prices that often undercut equivalent items at home. Skincare from Matsumoto Kiyoshi (Japan's largest pharmacy chain) is a popular buy. Plan to leave at least 20–30% of your bag empty on the way in if shopping is a goal.

Airport and Transport Tips

  • Peach Terminal 2 at KIX is a separate building reached by a free shuttle bus. Allow an extra 20 minutes if connecting from an international arrival in Terminal 1.
  • IC card (ICOCA or Suica): Load one on arrival at KIX. It works on all trains and buses in Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara — and on many convenience store purchases.
  • Itami is domestic only — do not book an international flight into ITM; none exist.
  • Weight enforcement: JAL and ANA rarely weigh carry-ons on domestic routes but are stricter internationally. Peach weighs bags at check-in and again at the gate.

Day Trips from Osaka

  • Kyoto: 15 min by Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka, 30 min by express from Osaka. Temples, bamboo groves, and traditional ryokan culture. Day-trip friendly; no extra luggage needed.
  • Nara: 45 min from Osaka Namba by Kintetsu. Famous for freely roaming deer in Ndeer Park. Pack light — this is a half-day outing.
  • Hiroshima: 90 min by Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka. Possible as a long day trip.

The Bottom Line

For Osaka, pack for the humidity rather than the cold, leave room for shopping, and skip all toiletries in favour of the nearest 7-Eleven. If you are flying Peach for any leg of the journey, treat 7 kg as a genuine hard ceiling rather than a soft guideline. Fly in, eat everything, and come home heavier than you left.

Frequently asked questions

Which airport serves Osaka for international flights?

Kansai International Airport (KIX) handles all international and some domestic flights. Itami Airport (ITM) is domestic only, serving routes from Tokyo and other Japanese cities.

How strict is Peach Aviation on carry-on size?

Very strict. Peach enforces a 36 × 56 × 23 cm limit with a 7 kg weight cap. Bags are often measured at the gate and oversized items must be checked for a fee.

Can I skip packing toiletries for Osaka?

Yes. Japanese convenience stores (konbini) sell full-size and travel toiletries 24 hours a day. A toothbrush, razor, face wash, and basic skincare are all readily available.

How do I get from Kansai Airport to central Osaka?

The Haruka Express runs from KIX to Shin-Osaka and Kyoto in about 75 minutes. The Nankai Rapid also connects KIX to Namba in around 40 minutes and is cheaper.

Should I leave bag space for shopping in Osaka?

Yes, especially if you plan to visit Shinsaibashi or Amemura. Japanese fashion and skincare are excellent buys. Budget at least a third of your bag space if shopping is on the agenda.
