The Two Osaka Airports

Kansai International Airport (KIX) sits on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, about 75 minutes from central Osaka by rail. It handles all international arrivals and most LCC domestic routes. Terminal 1 serves JAL, ANA, and major international carriers. Terminal 2 (a separate building reached by shuttle bus) is Peach Aviation's base.

ANA and JAL allow one main bag plus one personal item sharing 10 kg in all cabins. Main bag: 55×40×25 cm AND 115 cm total, including wheels and handles. Getting from KIX to Osaka and Kyoto

• Haruka Express: KIX to Tennoji (Osaka) in 45 min, Shin-Osaka in 55 min, Kyoto in 75 min. IC card or reserved seat.
• Nankai Rapid: KIX to Namba in 40 min. Cheapest option for central Osaka.
• Limousine bus: Direct to major hotels. No transfers but slower in traffic.

What to Pack

Essentials

• Clothes for 4–7 days depending on trip length. Japan has laundromats in most neighbourhoods and coin laundry at many guesthouses — plan one laundry day to extend any trip.
• Layers for summer (June–September). Heat and humidity in Osaka in July and August are intense. Lightweight moisture-wicking fabrics and a compact foldable umbrella are worth the space.

Shopping Allowance

Osaka's Shinsaibashi and Amerika-mura shopping districts offer Japanese fashion, streetwear, and vintage clothing at prices that often undercut equivalent items at home. Skincare from Matsumoto Kiyoshi (Japan's largest pharmacy chain) is a popular buy. Plan to leave at least 20–30% of your bag empty on the way in if shopping is a goal.

Airport and Transport Tips

• Peach Terminal 2 at KIX is a separate building reached by a free shuttle bus. Allow an extra 20 minutes if connecting from an international arrival in Terminal 1.
• IC card (ICOCA or Suica): Load one on arrival at KIX. It works on all trains and buses in Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara — and on many convenience store purchases.
• Itami is domestic only — do not book an international flight into ITM; none exist.
• Peach weight: Weigh the cabin bag and personal item together; their combined limit is 7 kg. Staff may check baggage, but no check frequency is established here.

Day Trips from Osaka
