Cathay Pacific Carry-On Rules: Economy to Business (2026)

Cathay Pacific normally permits one main cabin bag up to 56 × 36 × 23 cm plus one small item up to 40 × 30 × 15 cm. Their combined weight is 7 kg in Economy/Premium Economy, 10 kg in Business or 15 kg in First. The small item is not extra unrestricted weight. A specific Hong Kong–New Zealand exception is explained below.

Ordinary-route allowance

Measure wheels, handles and side pockets within the main-bag dimensions. In Economy and Premium Economy, the small item fits under the seat. A laptop bag, handbag, backpack or duty-free item uses that small-item allowance; it does not automatically add another piece.

Use the Cathay bag checker for one bag's dimensions and class limit. Weigh both items together separately: the tool does not sum them or select route and membership exceptions. A bag at the displayed maximum leaves no remaining combined weight for a second item.

Membership and the New Zealand exception

On ordinary routes, Cathay Silver/Gold members in Economy or Premium Economy receive 10 kg combined, and Diamond members in any cabin receive 15 kg combined. The one-main-bag structure remains. Another airline's oneworld status is not automatically the same cabin benefit.

The special rule applies only when the journey includes a nonstop Hong Kong–New Zealand flight, every sector is Cathay or Air New Zealand, and all ticketed points are in those two places. Business and Premium Economy passengers, and Cathay Silver/Gold/Diamond members in Economy, then receive two main pieces up to 7 kg each. Other passengers receive one 7 kg piece. Check the exact ticket rather than applying the ordinary Business 10 kg figure to this exception.

Ticket, children and restricted items

An Upgrade Bid keeps the original ticket's baggage allowance. Partner-operated flights require the partner's cabin policy; HK Express has its own rules. Do not assume that staff will ignore a size or weight excess.

A lap infant has no ordinary reserved-seat cabin allowance. The contract separately lists a small food/nappy bag, approved child restraint and a collapsible stroller up to 7 kg and 56 × 36 × 25 cm if cabin space is available. Arrange restraint approval and seating with Cathay. An infant discount is fare-dependent, not universally 10%.
