Heathrow Cabin Bags: Liquid Rules and Australia Exception
Check Heathrow liquid screening, the Australia 100 ml exception and airline cabin entitlement separately before departure, transfer or return.
Heathrow's published security guidance differs from a generic 100 ml packing checklist. Check airport screening, destination conditions and your airline's cabin allowance separately, especially if the journey includes another airport.
Ordinary liquids at Heathrow
The airport currently allows liquid containers up to 2 litres through screening at Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5. Liquids and large electronics can stay in the bag. Empty reusable metal or insulated bottles before screening.
Flights to Australia have a separate condition: Heathrow states that containers over 100 ml cannot be taken on those flights. Do not use the general screening limit as permission for that itinerary. Check the operator and any further restrictions.
Airport screening is not your fare allowance
Heathrow publishes a security limit of two hand-baggage items, each no larger than 56 × 45 × 25 cm. A handbag, laptop bag or small backpack counts as an item. This is an airport screening rule, not a promise that your airline includes two bags or accepts that box as a personal item.
Confirm the booked main-bag and under-seat allowance with the operating airline. Use the bag checker with the actual packed dimensions and enable Check both bags together if you have a personal item as well. Confirm unresolved route, aircraft and status conditions in the booking.
Check the transfer and return airport
A departure inspection does not clear a later security checkpoint. Schiphol currently retains the ordinary 100 ml container rule despite CT scanners. Frankfurt lists specific transfer and departure checkpoint exceptions.
Plan toiletries for every inspection on the actual route. If you need larger containers, check whether hold carriage is available and permitted. Do not open sealed duty-free purchases before understanding the onward security requirements. Necessary medicines and baby supplies have their own conditions on Heathrow's page; do not rely on an ordinary-liquid checklist for those items.
A departure preparation record
- Actual flight operators and baggage options for each leg.
- Packed dimensions and weights for each bag.
- Heathrow screening plus destination-specific conditions.
- Any later checkpoint or return airport's liquid rule.
- What stays accessible if the main bag is taken at the gate.
Use the route checker to save bag and operator parameters locally and recheck them before flying. It compares cabin allowances; it does not resolve security acceptance, immigration, automatic bag transfer or connection timing. If the bag must go in the hold, confirm the tag destination and collection instructions using the handover checklist.
