Economy Baggage Has Never Been More Complicated

If you flew economy class ten years ago, the rules were simple: you got a carry-on and probably a free checked bag. Today, most US airlines have added a Basic Economy tier that strips out overhead bin access on some routes, while budget carriers have gone even further — charging for everything except a tiny under-seat bag.

Understanding your specific fare class before you book is now essential. The price difference between two economy tickets on the same flight can look small until you add bags — and suddenly the "cheaper" ticket costs more.

Two Types of Economy: Basic vs. Standard

Basic Economy is a restricted fare designed to compete with budget carrier pricing. It typically includes:

• One personal item (under-seat bag) on most carriers
• No free checked bag
• No seat selection at booking (often)
• No changes or refunds (often)
• Sometimes: no overhead carry-on allowed

Standard Economy (sometimes called "Main Cabin," "Economy," or "Coach") is the traditional economy experience:

• One carry-on for the overhead bin
• One personal item
• Checked bags available for a fee
• Seat selection usually available

The gap between Basic and Standard Economy in price is often $15–$30 per flight. If you're traveling with any bags beyond a personal item, the upgrade to standard economy almost always pays for itself.

US Domestic Airlines: What's Actually Included

Delta Air Lines

Delta's basic and standard economy fares both include a carry-on and personal item — Delta does not restrict overhead bin access on domestic routes. Checked bags cost approximately $35 for the first and $45 for the second on domestic flights. Delta Medallion status members receive free checked bags. The Delta SkyMiles American Express cards also provide free first checked bags for cardholders and companions.

United Airlines

United Basic Economy restricts carry-on bags on certain domestic routes — passengers may only bring a personal item that fits under the seat. Standard economy (called "Economy" on United) includes the carry-on. Checked bags run $35–$40 for the first bag on most domestic routes. MileagePlus Premier members and United co-branded credit card holders receive free checked bags.

American Airlines

American's Basic Economy restricts carry-on bags on many domestic routes — the same personal-item-only limitation as United. Main Cabin includes the overhead carry-on. First checked bag runs approximately $35 each way domestically. AAdvantage elite members and Citi/Barclays co-branded cardholders receive free first checked bags.

Southwest Airlines

Budget Carriers: Fees on Everything

Spirit Airlines

Spirit's model is minimal base fare plus fees for nearly everything. The personal item (up to 18 x 14 x 8 inches) is free. Every other bag — carry-on or checked — costs extra. Prices range from $45 to over $100 per bag depending on route, timing, and whether you buy during booking versus at the airport. Spirit charges the highest fees at the gate.

Frontier Airlines

Frontier follows a similar model to Spirit. The personal item is free. Carry-on and checked bags require paid add-ons or bundles. The "WORKS" bundle includes bags plus other benefits and is often the best value if you need overhead bin access. Prices for individual bag add-ons range from $30–$99 depending on route and timing.

International Full-Service Carriers: Bags Included

Emirates

Emirates Economy includes one 55×38×22 cm bag up to 7 kg, without a universal additional personal bag. Premium Economy allows one up to 10 kg. Business/First normally pair a 55×38×22 cm bag with a 45×35×20 cm briefcase, each up to 7 kg. Brazil/India and garment-bag exceptions need ticket-specific confirmation.

Emirates checked allowance depends on the route and fare: most routes use a weight allowance, while Americas/Africa routes generally use a piece allowance. Read the ticket; no individual ordinary bag may exceed 32 kg.

Qatar Airways

British Airways

British Airways sells two economy fare types: "Hand Baggage Only" (carry-on included, no checked bag) and standard "Economy" (includes one checked bag). Both include carry-on and personal item. The fare difference is typically £20–£50 each way.

International vs. Domestic Allowances

International flights generally include more generous allowances because the checked bag was built into the fare structure for decades before budget carriers changed expectations. A transatlantic economy ticket on a network carrier almost always includes at least one checked bag; a domestic US economy ticket almost never does.

If you're connecting from a domestic flight to an international flight on the same ticket, your checked bag fees often follow the international allowance — meaning your domestic segment may include a free checked bag if it's ticketed together with an international flight. Confirm with your airline when booking.

How to Avoid Paying Extra in Economy

Compare total cost including bags. The cheapest headline fare plus bag fees often costs more than a slightly higher fare that includes bags. Always run the numbers before booking.

Get a co-branded airline credit card. The Delta Amex, United Explorer Card, American Airlines Citi card, and Alaska Airlines Visa all provide at least one free first checked bag per person per flight. On a round trip with two bags, that's $140 or more in savings — more than the card's annual fee.

Earn elite status. Even entry-level status (Silver, Gold, MVP) on most airlines includes free checked bags. Frequent flyers who reach status often forget they're no longer paying bag fees.

Join a loyalty program even without status. Some airlines — particularly international carriers — offer free bags to award ticket holders even without elite status.
