For an included Air France main bag, 12 kg is shared with the personal item. Each main-bag side must meet 55×35×25 cm: turning a 40 cm-wide bag lengthways in a bin does not make it comply with the 35 cm width limit.

What to Pack for Réunion Island

Réunion's geography creates a dramatic climate split:

Coast (Saint-Denis, Saint-Gilles, Saint-Pierre): Hot and humid year-round. Temperatures of 28-32°C with high humidity from November to April (cyclone season). Cooler and drier May to October.

Mountain calderas and volcano: Cool and variable at altitude. Cilaos caldera regularly reaches only 18-22°C even in summer. Mafate — accessible only on foot or by helicopter — has cool nights year-round. The volcano rim at 2,632 m elevation is cold even in January.

Airport and Transport Tips

Roland Garros Airport (RUN) is 8 km east of Saint-Denis, Réunion's capital.

• Taxi: Approximately €15-20 to Saint-Denis centre. Taxis are regulated and use meters. Reliable and safe.
• Car hire: Strongly recommended for exploring the island. Réunion has no rail network. The coastal road (RN 1 and RN 2) links the main towns, but the interior calderas require driving into steep mountain roads. Rental cars are available from all major providers at the airport.
• Inter-island transport: Confirm the operating airline and aircraft for each leg. Air Austral jets permit a main bag plus accessory sharing 12 kg; the EWA AIR ATR 72-600 allowance is one item. Do not substitute a generic 7 kg inter-island cap.

Tips for Flying Carry-On Only to Réunion

• Air France from Paris CDG: The main route is from Paris Charles de Gaulle with a flight time of approximately 10 hours. Air France also operates via Paris Orly depending on the season.
• Corsair: Corsair permits one 55×35×25 cm main bag plus one 33×25×20 cm accessory. They share 12 kg in Economy or 18 kg in Premium/Business; wheels, handles and gussets count. Premium cabins still have one main bag. An accepted compact stroller replaces the adult main bag rather than adding another.
• Connecting from the UK or Germany: No direct service exists from London, Frankfurt, or Amsterdam. Connections go via Paris CDG or Nairobi. Air France connections from UK airports (LHR, LGW, MAN) via CDG are the most common routing.
• Cyclone season (November–April): Weather disruption is possible. Carry-on-only travel is an advantage — you avoid baggage carousels when connections are tight.
• French customs rules apply: As an EU DOM, Réunion follows EU customs regulations. No duty-free savings on alcohol or tobacco when returning to mainland France.
