Carry-On for Tenerife: Ryanair, easyJet, and What to Pack

Tenerife is the Canary Islands' most visited island and one of the top UK package and budget airline destinations. Getting there is straightforward — Ryanair and easyJet between them offer direct routes from almost every UK regional airport. Getting the bag policy right takes a little more attention, because the free allowance varies significantly between fares and carriers.

Two Airports: TFS or TFN

Tenerife has two airports and which one you land at matters:

TFS — Tenerife South (Reina Sofía): This is where Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2, TUI, and most UK budget and charter airlines arrive. It serves the south of the island — Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje. If your hotel is in these resort areas, TFS is the right airport and you're 20–30 minutes from most accommodation.

TFN — Tenerife North (Los Rodeos): A smaller airport near the island's capital, Santa Cruz. Vueling, Iberia, and Binter Canarias use TFN predominantly. It's the correct airport for staying in Santa Cruz, La Laguna (a UNESCO World Heritage city), and the northern Anaga coast. Budget airline routes from the UK almost never use TFN.

Confirm which airport your flight uses before planning transport.

Ryanair and easyJet Policy on Tenerife Routes

Ryanair: One free small bag, maximum 40×30×20 cm. A second 55×40×20 cm bag up to 10 kg requires Priority & 2 Cabin Bags or a fare that includes it. A paid checked-bag product is different from cabin permission. Do not rely on free gate-checking an unentitled large bag.

easyJet: One 45×36×20 cm underseat bag is included. A 56×45×25 cm large cabin bag must be booked or included through the applicable fare or membership entitlement. Each bag may weigh up to 15 kg; you must lift and carry it yourself. Confirm the large bag appears in your booking.

Jet2: One 56×45×25 cm bag up to 10 kg is included, plus a 40×30×20 cm underseat item. A 22 kg checked bag is a separate booking allowance; do not assume every flight-only fare includes one. Operational or capacity restrictions can still require hold carriage.

TFS Security and Terminal

Use your airline's check-in and boarding deadlines and the airport's current advice to plan arrival. Bag drop, security, assistance and holiday traffic can change the time needed. Keep travel documents and items needed during screening accessible.

What to Pack for Tenerife

Tenerife is a year-round warm destination — it sits at 28°N latitude and the Canary Current moderates the Atlantic climate. Winter temperatures rarely drop below 18°C in the south. The beach packing list is genuinely minimal:

Beach and resort essentials:

• 3–4 swimsuits or boardshorts
• 4–5 lightweight tops and t-shirts
• 2 pairs of shorts
• 1 going-out outfit for dinner in the resort
• Flip flops (wear on travel day)
• SPF 50 sunscreen — Tenerife UV index reaches 9–10 year-round
• Sunglasses and a hat

The Teide Exception: Pack Layers

Teide National Park is the island's most dramatic excursion. Mount Teide, at 3,718 m, is the highest peak in Spain and one of the largest volcanoes in the world. At the summit (accessible by cable car from 2,356 m), temperatures are cold year-round and the wind can be strong even in midsummer.

If Teide is on your itinerary, add:

• 1 lightweight fleece or insulating mid-layer
• 1 windproof outer shell (compact and packable)
• Comfortable closed-toe shoes or trainers (worn on travel day)

These three items can be worn on the flight instead of packed, keeping your bag weight flat. A fleece, a shell jacket, and trainers on your body replace 600–700 g of bag space.

Island-Hopping: Binter Canarias Weight Rules

For Binter, plan around 8 kg, not 10 kg. The ATR limit is 45×35×25 cm; the Embraer limit is 52×40×25 cm, with small personal effects allowed additionally. A Ryanair-sized 55 cm case does not meet either Binter length limit merely because its weight fits.

For a connecting itinerary combining both fleets, Binter accepts the Embraer allowance without an extra charge. If the bag cannot fit in the ATR cabin, the airline describes handover and collection at the aircraft. Separate oversize or overweight baggage can require paid checking; that is different from a capacity-only transfer.

Check a bag against the Binter ATR default, then verify the booked aircraft and connection conditions with Binter. The tool has no aircraft selector.

What to Buy in Tenerife

Tenerife's supermarkets (Mercadona, Lidl, Carrefour) and pharmacies stock:

• Sunscreen at lower prices than UK airports
• Aloe vera after-sun — a local Canarian product, very cheap
• Toiletries and over-the-counter medications

Buy sunscreen and after-sun on arrival and save 300–400 g. Aloe vera gel from Tenerife is lightweight, cheap, and excellent for sun-exposed skin — a useful destination buy rather than something to pack from home.

One-Week Tenerife Packing Checklist

For a 7-day beach holiday for a UK budget traveller, fitting in a Ryanair Priority cabin bag:

• 3 swimsuits or boardshorts
• 5 t-shirts and lightweight tops
• 2 pairs of shorts
• 1 evening outfit
• Flip flops (on feet)
• Trainers or comfortable shoes (on feet if Teide planned)
• Fleece layer (on body if Teide planned)
• Small toiletry bag — miniatures only, buy full-size on arrival
• Phone charger, headphones, passport wallet

Total weight: 4–6 kg, well inside Ryanair's 10 kg Priority allowance.
