Keep BCN security preparation separate from cabin entitlement

Aena's published hand-luggage guidance keeps ordinary liquids in containers no larger than 100 ml, in one clear resealable bag up to 1 litre per passenger. It identifies exceptions for necessary liquid medicines and special diets and gives separate instructions for sealed purchases. Follow the checkpoint's instructions; an airline add-on does not relax security rules.

Barcelona El Prat does not give every airline the same cabin allowance. Prepare for the operating airline and the baggage option selected in your booking. A previous trip without a bag check does not establish permission for a larger or heavier bag.

Compare the booked allowance

Include handles, wheels and external pockets when measuring the packed bag. The depth accepted by one airline may exceed another's limit. On Air Europa, weigh both Business main bags together; the single-bag checker cannot add their weights.

For another airline, open the airline catalogue and check the operating carrier for every segment. Buying a checked bag does not necessarily add overhead entitlement.

Before leaving for the airport

• Open the booking confirmation and verify the baggage option for each passenger.
• Measure and weigh the packed bags, including anything bought before boarding.
• Compare any required baggage addition with the airline's current booking quote.
• Confirm the terminal, check-in deadline and boarding time from your booking and current airport information. Allow for transfers and security queues.

There is no reliable airport-wide fee, weight limit or relaxed time of day to substitute for the airline's policy. A bag that exceeds an allowance may need hold carriage; a fee does not guarantee space in the cabin.

If a bag is taken at the gate

Ask where it will be returned and keep the tag. Remove items that must remain with you under the carrier's safety rules, and keep documents and necessary medication accessible. Even a compliant Air Europa bag can travel in the hold when cabin space is unavailable. Do not assume return at the aircraft door or a fixed delivery time.

If a charge appears inconsistent with the booking, retain the receipt, baggage entitlement and tag, then use the airline's customer-service channel. This guide does not promise a refund or impose a universal complaint deadline.
