Garuda checked baggage: September 2026 piece rules

Start with the baggage line on your Garuda e-ticket. The airline introduced a piece concept for tickets bought or issued from 1 September 2026. The date of travel alone does not determine which system applies.

Which ticket rules apply?

Garuda distinguishes reserving a seat from paying for and issuing the ticket. For a group or a changed booking, confirm the applicable allowance in the actual record.

New published reference table

The published standard total dimension is 158 cm, adding length, width and height. The policy directs larger bags to the oversize counter. Do not interpret that instruction as automatic acceptance or a free oversize allowance. The exact number of included bags follows the route, cabin, fare and e-ticket; check any exception with Garuda.

The old reference table showed domestic Economy 20 kg, Business 30 kg and First 40 kg; international Economy 30 kg, Business 40 kg and First 50 kg. Those are historical weight-concept references for qualifying older tickets, not permission to pool the new per-piece limits.

Weigh each piece separately

Under the piece concept, both count and individual bag weight matter. For example, two bags weighing 20 kg and 26 kg do not satisfy a two-piece allowance of 23 kg each merely because the combined total is 46 kg. Repack or confirm an applicable excess-baggage arrangement.

Passengers on the same booking, going to the same destination and checking in together may combine allowances under Garuda’s conditions, but the allowed piece count and each bag’s weight limits still apply. Keep the claim tags issued at check-in and confirm where the bags will be collected on a connecting journey.

Children and infants

Children in their own seats receive the adult baggage entitlement for their cabin and fare. Under the new infant policy, an infant without a seat must be named and linked to the accompanying adult in the booking. The Economy/Business table provides one additional checked piece matching the adult’s allowance: the official examples are one extra piece up to 23 kg or up to 32 kg respectively. Confirm any other class or ticket situation.

Strollers, infant carrying baskets and child car seats do not reduce the published free baggage allowance under these infant rules. Cabin use, safe stowage, approval and airport handover remain separate questions; aircraft-door return is not guaranteed here.

Fees and cabin bags

If a bag exceeds the included allowance, ask Garuda for the charge applicable to the booking. This guide does not publish an unverified flat online, airport or gate fee. Special equipment has its own conditions.

The general cabin allowance remains one bag up to 7 kg, within 56×36×23 cm and a 115 cm total, plus one personal item. A checked-baggage upgrade does not automatically increase cabin limits. Check security and battery requirements before handing a cabin bag into the hold.
