Turkish Airlines Checked Baggage: Allowances, Fees & Tips

Turkish Airlines’ checked allowance depends on the ticket, route and fare. Use the official baggage calculator and reservation details before deciding how many suitcases to pack.

Weight system and piece system

Under the piece system, the standard weight per piece is 23 kg in Economy and 32 kg in Business. These are per-piece rules, not a universal promise of one or two free bags. Do not assume every intercontinental route includes two pieces or every domestic Economy ticket includes 23 kg.

Measure and weigh the packed suitcase

Standard free-allowance baggage must total no more than 158 cm across its three dimensions. No single piece may exceed 32 kg under either system. A heavier load must be split into acceptable pieces, with any resulting extra-piece charge checked against the ticket.

For example, a suitcase measuring 75 + 50 + 30 cm totals 155 cm. That dimension total is within 158 cm, but a 26 kg suitcase exceeds a 23 kg Economy piece allowance by 3 kg. The arithmetic does not establish the charge: the applicable excess system and route quote still matter.

Extra, overweight and oversized are different

• Extra piece: more pieces than the ticket includes.
• Overweight: a piece or total load exceeds the relevant weight allowance.
• Oversized: dimensions exceed the standard allowance; the official page has separate oversize conditions and charges.

Do not multiply excess kilograms by an invented worldwide rate. The official calculator and reservation quote determine the cost for the route and selected package; additional equipment can have separate conditions. Online purchase is not evidence of a fixed 30–50% saving.

Status benefits and infants

The checked-baggage page publishes an additional piece under the piece system or 20 kg under the weight system for Star Alliance Gold, subject to the applicable ticket and carrier conditions. Verify the benefit actually attached to the booking; do not infer a status tier from a similarly named partner tier. Status does not increase the cabin allowance.

Infants normally receive 10 kg checked under the weight system or one 23 kg piece under the piece system, plus the published foldable-stroller allowance. EcoFly routes without free checked baggage are excluded from the extra infant checked allowance. The infant cabin allowance remains one piece up to 8 kg.

Before a connection

Check which carrier’s checked rules apply to the complete itinerary and read the destination on the bag tag. Turkish’s transfer page distinguishes international-to-international, international-to-domestic and separate-ticket travel. For a published single-ticket international connection, bags can continue to the final destination; do not apply that instruction blindly to a different connection type.

Keep the ticket allowance, baggage purchase receipt and bag-tag receipt accessible. If a cabin bag is moved to the hold, separate items that must remain in the cabin before handover.
